Focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism
As the weather gets colder, there is nothing better than staying in and reading a good book! There is an endless supply of options that cover just about every topic. When choosing your next read, we at Career Design encourage you to look into Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility. While confronting the complexities of racial identity may not be particularly comfortable for most people, taking downtime to learn more about diversity can be one of the best ways to show allyship.
“Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.”

Hiring doesn’t happen through listings alone but through relationships. Each of us is connected to a variety of familial, professional, and social communities, including Northeastern University’s vast global network. Since you can’t easily see other people’s networks, it is essential to Tell Your Story regularly and let the power of networks connect you to fitting opportunities. LinkedIn, NUsource, and NUworks, are all useful networking tools.

Informational Interviewing
Check out these resources: Navigating Your Network
How do I develop my network and meet people in my industry or careers of interest?
- Over 70% of jobs are found through networking and 94% of recruiters use social media in their recruitment efforts with LinkedIn as their #1 choice! LinkedIn, NUsource, and NUworks are all useful networking tools. Reach out to family, classmates, their parents, previous co-ops, internships, and other prior employers to be introduced to others in your major/degree, industry, or career of interest!
What is a professional association, and can it help create more connections for me?
- Professional Associations are groups of individuals organized by career or industry. Membership in a professional association can have many benefits. There are often student or recent graduate membership rates that can be as low as $20. Many professional associations offer job and internship postings, conferences, and networking opportunities. To find professional associations in your field, begin by just searching for “[your major] professional association.” It’s that easy! For other ways use this list of organizations at Northeastern, JobStars, or the U.S. Directory of Associations.
How do I incorporate my identity into networking?
- Identity and networking have many meaningful connections. To find those with a similar identity, look for affinity-based networking groups on LinkedIn or through your search browser. Groups like “Black Enterprises Networked”, “Diversity and Disability @ Work”, and “LGBT Professionals” are aimed at connecting people through both interest and identity. These connections can provide meaningful insight into the specifics of identity in their field.

Meet the Career Design Team!
Amorette Farkas is a new Career Advisor at Career Design, although she is not new to the Northeastern community. She was previously an Academic Advisor at Khoury College of Computer Sciences for nearly two years and then decided to become a Career Mentor at Career Design, venturing beyond academic support to helping students navigate their career paths. Some of her passions include practicing yoga, playing her guitar, and spending time outdoors, where she enjoys taking day trips and exploring different parts of New England.
At Career Design, Amorette works closely with the pre-law and graduate student populations. Her biggest piece of advice to people in their career journey is to trust your instincts and never compare your story to someone else’s. When it comes to making career decisions, it’s important to follow your intuition and let your unique talents and experiences guide you in designing your own path.
