Sophocles was one of the most popular play writers in ancient Greece. He was born in BC near the city of Athens. His father influenced him a lot in his education. Sophocles was a very intelligent man who lived to be about 90 years old. His arts are still used to this day.


Laius is a king who is married to Jocasta. He is father to Oedipus and dies in the beginning of the story on a crossroad. Towards the end of the play we find out that he was accidentally killed by his son.

Oracle of Apollo

In this story, he predicts Oedipus will kill his own father.


She is the loving wife of Laius and mother of Oedipus. Her husband is killed and she is left widowed. Eventually, she marries her son and tries to keep it a secret.


Polybus is king of Corinth

He raised Oedipus as his adopted son.

Queen Merope

She raised Oedipus as her adopted son.


He is the main character of the story and he becomes the king of Thebes. He is known for solving riddles since he saved the entire city from the Sphinx. As a reward he marries his birth mother whom he is not aware of.


This is a winged monster who tries to destroy the city of Thebes. Oedipus stops this by solving one his tricky riddles.

Antigone and Iseme

These are the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta. Therefore they are also his sisters.

Eteocles and Polynices

These are the sons of Oedipus and Jocasta. They are mentioned in the end of the story. Therefore, they are also brothers to Oedipus.
