Brentwood Elementary Mission Statement
~Achievement~Actions~Attitudes~
Greetings Parents:
When can you be in a room of fourth and fifth grade students and be able to hear a pin drop? Well today, it was at the final “Battle of the Books” competition that all elementary schools participated in today at Clarks Creek Elementary School. Battle of the Books is a student based competition based on the old Brain Game concept popular in high schools and middle schools. Students read several books and then, in teams of four, answered questions about the content of the books. Teams of students competed within each elementary school for the top spot and then, today, had their final competition between the schools at Clarks Creek.
The competition today came down to the last round of questions. The team from Brentwood placed second in the competition. We are all so proud of the way our students demonstrated positive attitudes and a true team spirit. They collaborated and agreed on their answers and stuck together. Way-To-Go Brentwood. The final team from Brentwood consisted of Morgan Evans, Delaney Moore, Megan Siereveld and Josie Heyob. Great job Girls!
Sincerely,
Mr. Underwood

Students of the Week
Staff MVP of the Week ~ Mrs. Jeanine Carr, Special Education Instructional Assistant
Our staff Most Valuable Player is Special Education Instructional Assistant, Mrs. Jeanine Carr. 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Gray enjoys working with Jeanine, saying, "She really cares and wants the best for students. Just recently, she gone above and beyond for a student coming up with her own idea on how to see a student reach his goals and succeed. Jeanine is a positive, patient, go-getter, and is a great encourager to everyone! She continuously checks up on students out of the classroom. Thank you so much for all your help Jeanine!"
Mrs. Carr has been an Instructional Aide at Brentwood since September of this school year. She was a substitute teacher in the Plainfield Schools before that and spent over 10 years in the food service industry as a food service director and sales representative.
Mrs. Carr grew up in Floral Park, NY which is on Long Island. Floral Park is near Belmont Park, where the third race in the Triple Crown of horse racing is held each June - The Belmont Stakes. It is also a short drive to many beaches and an hour train ride from New York City. Mrs. Carr has a BS degree in Restaurant & Hotel Management from Purdue.
Mrs. Carr has been married to her husband, Ted, for 18 years and they have two children together: a daughter, Madison (6th grade at PCMS), and a son, Spencer (2nd grader at Central Elementary). The Carr family also has a golden retriever named Sadie.
Some of Mrs. Carr's Favorite Things:
Movie ~ Grease
TV Show ~ The Big Bang Theory & Property Brothers
Book ~ Tiger Can't Sleep
Music ~ Maroon 5
Flower ~ Star Gazer Lily
Restaurant ~ Cooper's Hawk
Candy ~ Banana Laffy Taffy & all things Chocolate with Caramel
Sports Teams ~ Colts & Purdue
Holiday ~ Easter
Food ~ NY style meatball & onion pizza and creme brûlée
Mrs. Carr enjoys cooking, vacuuming, laundry - "Just kidding!" jokes Jeanine. She likes scrapbooking, yoga, and spending time with her friends and family when she isn't working.
Where is the most interesting place you have been? "I am not a huge history buff, but we visited Monticello one summer and it was very cool to walk around such a historical place!"
What is something you have never done but would like to do? "Win the lottery"
Who is the most famous person you have ever met? Purdue Pete
Student Moments: "The moments that I treasure most are those when students share their accomplishments with me. Big or small the joy and excitement they have because they achieved a goal or did well on something they have worked hard on is a great feeling!"
Advice for Parents: "Be engaged in the school work your child brings home. Talk about and ask questions on work they have completed at school and are doing at home. Share your knowledge and experiences on topics they are learning about. Showing that you are interested in what they are learning can keep them interested in learning, especially if there is a topic they are not very excited about."
Fun Mrs. Carr Fact: This summer will mark the eight year as co-director of my church's Vacation Bible School program.
Mrs. Sullivan, first grade teacher, compliments her co-worker profusely! "Jeanine is always helpful and cheerful with the students. She is patient and will "stick her neck out" for any student or staff member in need. Jeanine works hard to form a personal relationship with each of her students. We are blessed to have Jeanine on staff here at Brentwood!"

What's up with Lice?
January is a peak season for lice. The reason: Kids may come into contact with lice during the holiday break. Make sure that you are checking your kids regularly for lice.
Here are a few facts to help guide you:
· Lice tend to live close to the scalp and are most visible behind the ears or at the base of the neck.
· Lice will lay eggs (nits) at the base of a hair. As that hair grows, the nit becomes farther away from the scalp. Where you find nits can indicate how long ago the nit was laid, and when the outbreak started.
· Lice do not hop or fly, they can only crawl. To spread from head to head, they need “a vehicle”, like a comb, brush, or hat. Sometimes they spread from one person to another after prolonged head to head contact. Lying on a bed, couch, pillow, or carpet that has recently been in contact with an infested person is another example of how lice are spread.
If you should notice a lice infestations, apply the following precautionary measures
· Use the pediculicides (lice medicine) as directed in the package insert. Infested persons should not use a combination shampoo/conditioner or hair conditioner before using lice medicine and should not re-wash their hair for 1-2 days after the lice medicine has been applied. Many experts now recommend doing your second head lice treatment on day 9.
· Detection of live lice more than 24 hrs. after treatment means that either the treatment failed or you have gotten re-infested. Call your health care provider before retreating, as a different pediculicide may be necessary.
· To avoid potential toxic reactions in people, repetitive use of over-the-counter (OTC) head lice control products is not recommended.
· Also be sure to wash your child's clothing and bedding in hot water and vacuum to remove lice and nits from furniture, carpets, stuffed animals, car seats, etc. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you really only have to clean "items that have been in contact with the head of the person with infestation in the 24 to 48 hours before treatment," and not everything in your house. You can put anything that you can't wash in a large plastic bag for a few weeks if you are really concerned that it is infested, although this is rarely necessary.
If you have any questions contact the school nurse at 838-3653.

Kindness
Respect for Others' Rights ~ Connor Burress, 4th Grade
Mrs. Shepherd wrote, "I believe Connor exemplifies the value of kindness because we have had several new students at Brentwood start in the middle of the year. Connor has shown kindness to these new students by eating with them at lunch, playing with them at recess, and showing them around Brentwood. Connor has also shown kindness to students who have recently started in the ELL program. Even though there is a language barrier, Connor tries his best to communicate and help. I am proud of the person Connor is and proud to have him represent Brentwood as our ambassador. Way to go Connor!"
