SHS Counseling Newsletter
December 2015
School Counseling Focus of the Month
This month the students will focus on career exploration. We will kick off the month by having students in advisory periods working on skills such as communicating in a professional manner, giving a good handshake and learning what questions to ask about careers. Students in tenth and eleventh grade will participate in a job fair on Monday, December 7th. There will be over thirty community businesses represented at the fair. We also are encouraging our tenth graders to participate in the annual job shadow day, but they will need to pick up an application from their counselor. Ninth graders continue to set goals for high school that will allow them to chose a career path that is right for them.
Character Education Trait
The character education trait of the month is gratitude. Gratitude can be defined as the quality of being thankful and having readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. What are you grateful for today?
Senior Spotlight
Seniors are now receiving acceptance letters and merit based financial award letters in the mail, and we want to celebrate their achievements! Please bring in your letters so that the counselors can add each acceptance to a cap that will be displayed by the office and keep track of your financial award to be announced in the spring. The Senior Seminar on Tuesday, December 1st will focus on planning a successful visit to college campuses and cover important reminders for seniors as they approach the winter break.
Parent Information
Several summer opportunities are starting to become available for students. Some programs have winter deadlines, so students need to be working on applications now. We encourage students to participate in character building activities, and attending a summer program is a great way to do that. If you would like for your student to build his or her resume and want to know more about what is available, please feel free to contact your student's school counselor. As opportunities become available, information is sent out through Remind messages. If you aren't currently getting Remind messages, you can find instructions for signing up on the counselor's webpage or email us for directions.
