Mayfield Messenger
Week 38 Edition/May 5, 2023
Message from Dr. Frischkorn
Good Evening Mayfield Intermediate School students and families!
Next week we will celebrate our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week! Mayfield is home to 72 licensed and certified teachers and 30 additional staff members whose sole goal is to help all our students experience success. Every person that works in Mayfield is a teacher to our students. We have a solid staff, and I feel so fortunate to be the proud principal of this tremendous school. A key to a successful school is to fill the school with outstanding teachers and staff members. Here at Mayfield, we continue to be extremely fortunate that many high-quality teachers have chosen to stay here or decided to join us here at Mayfield to continue their teaching careers with us.
This past week also marked Nurses’ Appreciation Week. Mayfield is fortunate to have two individuals who ensure that our student’s health needs are taken care of. Nurse Robinson is instrumental in ensuring that parents are always notified if a child is in need, and she ensures that our staff is well trained and knowledgeable and ready to help if a student needs medical support. Our Certified Nursing Assistant, Ms. Benkamsal, is constantly on the move throughout the school checking in on students and providing support in the nurse’s office and in the classroom. Nurse Robinson and Ms. Benkamsal make an outstanding team and our community if so fortunate that they are here.
If you have a moment, please contact our outstanding teachers and let them know their hard work and dedication are appreciated.
Always Learning,
Dr. Donald Frischkorn

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 8-12
SOL Testing Begins Tuesday!
Tuesday, May 9th, our students will begin their SOL assessments. The SOL assessments are common assessments that are administered throughout the State of Virginia. Students will take yearly SOL assessments in math and reading in grades 3-8. The SOL assessments provide schools with valuable information about students’ progress. At Mayfield, we aim to have every student pass their SOL exam and show growth on their SOL assessments from the previous year. Our teachers and students have worked extremely hard for the past school year, and we are excited to see how much our students have flourished academically.
Please ensure that your child is present at school on the following dates:
SOL Testing Dates:
5th & 6th Grade Reading: Tuesday, May 9th
5th & 6th Grade Math: Tuesday, May 16th
5th Grade Science: Thursday, May 18th
Attendance Matters
As we quickly approach the end of the school year, we want to remind students and families that improving student attendance continues to be a focus for our school. Since the start of the second semester, we have seen our students’ attendance improve. We aim to ensure that very few students are considered Chronically Absent for the school year. A student is considered Chronically Absent if they miss 10% or more of the school year. Ten percent of the school year is equivalent to 18 days of instruction. Regardless of whether or not the absence is excused or unexcused, every absence counts. For the next three and a half weeks, please make it a focus for your child to be at school every day!
Below is the percentage of students considered Chronically Absent during the school year.
Love Your Laptop
Our students have done a great job caring for their laptops throughout the school year. Our 5th-grade students were provided a new Chromebook at the beginning of the year, and our 6th-grade students use the laptops from last year.
One area that we do need to focus on is the few students who are causing intentional damage to their laptops. Missing computer keys from the keyboard and cracked computer screens are the two most common items that are intentionally damaged. We will be reaching out to families and letting them know that they will be charged for any damage to a computer that is deemed intentional by our technology specialist and/or school administration.
