Washington Weekly
December 4, 2020
It was so good to see those bright smiling faces back in person and virtually this week! We seemed to settle back in our routines this week and began our three week adventure toward the winter break and the end of the second nine weeks. Can you believe that?
Your kiddos have done so well embracing this school year in the different ways that we've had to adjust. They've adapted and truly shown how Eagles RISE! We are proud of them every day!!
As always, we are here to help your family in any way we can. Please reach out to us at lconnery@norman.k12.ok.us, slowery@norman.k12.ok.us or through the school # at 366-5984 if we can assist in any way.
Stay safe and well!

Second Chance Supply Drive
In the spirit of the giving season, Washington will be hosting a supply drive for Second Chance animal shelter here in Norman. Second Chance Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c)3 non-profit no-kill shelter. They receive no city, state or federal funds. The shelter runs ONLY on donations. Second Chance’s mission is to give abandoned dogs and cats a second chance at a forever home. We will be collecting donations now through December 18th. Students can drop off supplies under the holiday tree in the foyer at their teacher's discretion. Below is a list of supplies Second Chance is in need of this Winter. Supplies will be delivered at the end of the school day on December 18th. Thank you for your support and generosity!
Supplies Needed:
Laundry detergent
Printer paper
Rachel Ray brand dog food
Purina 1 brand cat and dog food
Bleach/ Clorox wipes
Dish soap

Please Make Sure to MASK UP Before Getting on the Bus or Out of Your Car in the Mornings!
Please make sure your child has a mask on before exiting your car in the morning or before getting on the bus. Having an extra mask in their backpack is also a great idea! Thanks for helping us keep everyone safe!
Help Spread Some Holiday Joy!
Parents and Families,
As the holiday Season quickly approaches, several families have reached out to see if there is anything they can do to spread a little joy. With that in mind, I would like to facilitate connecting families who are able to help with families who need a little extra support. If you would like to sponsor a child or family to help with gifts, please contact Mr. Graham at grahamt@norman.k12.ok.us by December 7th . Thank you for your consideration and may your holidays be merry and bright!

Our Students are Changing the Future with an Hour of Code
Dear Parents,
We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.
But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Only 47% of all high schools teach computer science.
That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (Our Hour of Code will last 2 weeks - December 7-18). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Washington Elementary is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. I encourage you to volunteer, reach out to local media, share the news on social media channels and consider hosting additional Hour of Code events in the community.
This is a chance to change the future of education in Norman, OK.
See http://hourofcode.com/us for details, and help spread the word.

NEW! Washington Winter Party Give Back:
We have had many parents ask how they can help and give back during this time! The PTA has asked each teacher to create an Amazon Wish List for their classrooms (games, tools, supplies) that can be used in their classroom. If they choose to participate, their list should be shared soon in their weekly newsletter. If you wish to purchase an item from the wish list, please have your child bring the item wrapped to their class Winter Party on Friday, December 18. The teachers can then unwrap the gifts during the winter party as a class! We ask that items be purchased through Amazon to avoid duplicates. The students will be so excited with the new items! Thank you for caring for our teachers!
Washington PTA Online Store: It has been brought to our attention that when you visit the online store and click on an item to purchase, the price does not appear. We are currently working to fix this problem. When you add the item “to the cart”, the price will appear and will allow you to make the purchase. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience.
*Questions? Please feel free to call, text, or email Washington PTA President, Summer McGuire at (405) 249-6042 or by email at sdufran@yahoo.com.
