Caldwell School District Update
From Superintendent Dr. N. Shalene French
April 14, 2023
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Guardians,
On Monday, our Trustees met to celebrate our outstanding youth and to discuss challenges they face on a day-to-day basis. One of these challenging areas is youth vaping, which is a state and national concern. Every day our building administrators and School Resource Officers meet with parents and their child about vaping.
Awareness is the first place to start in order to begin addressing this problem.
We want to share a very informative documentary: Nic Sick: The Dangers of Youth Vaping. Produced by Idaho Public Television, this film features teens from across Idaho who share their struggles to overcome vape addiction.
Nic Sick is part of KNOW VAPE, a statewide campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of youth vaping including free resources, shareable social media, curriculum for educators, and an anti-vape video contest for teens.
Education is key to healthy families and a healthy community.
Caldwell High School Student Council Receives National Award
Caldwell High School’s Student Council has a strong commitment to service, leadership, and community. The council received the IASC State Service project award for their contributions to and work with local Domestic Violence Shelters. The council raised over $5,000 this year to help various causes in the community including: Multiple Sclerosis, Chron's disease, and suicide prevention.
Caldwell High School’s Student Council Advisor and leadership teacher, Andi Arnold, states, “I believe we have the best student council in the state of Idaho. These students are committed to not only their school, but to the Caldwell community as well. The passion and dedication that I have witnessed from these students is commendable. I watch them lead, lift, and learn every day and I am so proud of all they have accomplished.”
Advanced Opportunities Summer Program
The Advanced Opportunities Summer Program is not your traditional summer school program. Advanced Opportunities is ideal for those students currently enrolled in grades 6 through 11 who want to accelerate their learning.
Students can earn one to two credits in the summer through a personalized, flexible schedule. Advanced Opportunity Summer Program sessions are offered at Caldwell High School: one session in June and the second session in July.
College and Career experiences will also be offered during the Advanced Opportunities Program. These experiences include college visits, guest speakers, and personalized counseling for post-high school planning.
Please contact your school counselor for more information.
Kindergarten Registration
We're signing up our youngest learners for Kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school year. In-person Kindergarten Registration will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 2:30-6:00 pm at each of our six elementary schools. An immunization clinic, provided by Southwest District Health, will also be held at Lincoln Elementary School for all students coming into Kindergarten next year.
Generous Donation
We also want to congratulate our welding fabrication team! For the second year in a row, the team won the SkillsUSA State Championships, earning an invitation to compete at the SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.
Spotlight on Early Learning
Participating superintendents in the AASA Early Learning Cohort engaged in meaningful dialogue with their peers, shared innovative solutions, and reviewed emerging research to facilitate necessary change in the nation’s schools.
The AASA Early Learning Cohort visited Lewis & Clark, Sacajawea, and Wilson Elementary Schools. Participants visited pre-school and Kindergarten classrooms. They also learned about our Community Schools model and our positive community partnerships.
Caldwell Teacher Receives VFW’s Top Award
Kelly Garey, Second Grade Teacher at Van Buren Elementary School, was recently awarded the VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year Award.
Every year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars selects one teacher from the elementary, middle, and high school levels to receive a $1,000 award for professional development and $1,000 for their school.
Mrs. Garey is a retired Navy Veteran and was named the elementary school winner for her dedication to fostering patriotism, and passion for serving her country and local community, and her continued efforts to organize field trips, activities, and services to help her students learn about and recognize America's veterans and their military service.
"I was actually in my classroom when they called me," said Mrs. Garey. "I was very excited to be able to celebrate this award with my students."
Congratulations Mrs. Garey!! Thank you for your service both inside and outside of the classroom!
