READING AND SOCIAL STUDIES
Land Ho! After sailing on the Mayflower (climbing aboard our desks) for "66 days", we have finally arrived in the new land. We are learning about the Pilgrims' journey to America and the hardships they faced along the way and when they landed in America. Through our reading of the novel, Eating the Plates, we are learning to inference, compare and contrast our lives to that of the Pilgrims, to analyze characters, and to monitor comprehension. Ask your child about the Pilgrims' diet while on the journey to America!
WRITING
Our focus this trimester is on narrative writing and crafting true stories. We are using the Lucy Calkins Units of Study to learn this craft, and I will share samples and goals with you at conference time next week. The students are building fluency in daily writing, and enjoying the process of creating "voice and style" through revision.
STREAM
We have completed our Unit on Forces, Objects and Motion, and will begin a Unit on Weather after the break. Students will study weather patterns, use mathematics, technology, and engineering to become weather experts and reporters. Students will be publishing a weather brochure, creating weather tools, and writing and videotaping a weather report.
Stone Soup Celebration and Holiday Community Service
We will celebrate Thanksgiving "Stone Soup Style" on this Friday, November 13th. We will read and act out the story, Stone Soup. The Room Moms will provide foods and we will cook a "stone soup" (one soup will be vegetarian and gluten free) and learn about the themes of cooperation, teamwork, and giving.
Our class will participate in PTO and school sponsored food and gift drives during the holidays. Please read the PTO newsletters to participate in these service projects!
