WEEK ENDING IN 11/19/2021
Dear OSES Families,
We had a great week at OSES!
The US News & World Report recently published its first ever rankings of public elementary schools. Orlando Science Elementary placed within top 30% of elementary schools in Florida (203/2567 state), (7/170 OCPS) making it an official US News Best Elementary School. Congratulations to all students and staff who attended or worked at OSES last school year. We hope to continue this recognition.

KINDERGARTEN
This week in social studies and character development we have been learning about the First Thanksgiving and gratitude. Our kiddos have had a great time participating in Thanksgiving/fall activities. In science we have been learning all about texture. Students have had hands-on experiences feeling and describing different textures.
Next week is fall break. We hope you all have a wonderful time with your families and we will see you Monday, Nov. 29th when we return back to campus.
FIRST
SECOND
Ms. Nickerson’s class tested the relationship between force and distance by creating spoon catapults. The students learned how applying more force allowed their projectile to travel further.
THIRD
FOURTH
Mr. Mateer’s class started learning about everyone’s favorite math concept this week: fractions! Students have been exploring equivalent fractions, how to figure out if two fractions are equivalent and how to generate new equivalent fractions. In science, we’re taking a test of Forms of Energy, and in reading, we’re taking a test on reading literature. Specifically, comparing dramas with visuals and determining theme!
Ms. Michetti’s class presented their pumpkin book reports this week! Each student picked their favorite character from a book and described character traits both inferred and explicitly stated, designed a pumpkin to look like that character, and presented to their peers. It was a great success and the students worked very hard!
FIFTH
Ms. Galan’s class played Minute to win it games to review math and science concepts.
They also finished their weather reports on this weeks weather focusing on the cold fronts we have been experiencing.
SIXTH
Physical Education:
We have completed playing Lacrosse, Kickball, and T-ball/Cricket. Starting this week, we begin practicing skills on basketball.
In ELA, students recently finished a project on his poem “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe where they drew their own interpretation of the poem and supported their artistic choices with textual evidence. They also have read several texts on the Trail of Tears and practiced identifying an author’s argument. The students learned how to determine whether or not an argument is effectively presented and sufficiently supported by evidence.
To wrap up the last week before the break students in Mrs. Aramayo's and Ms. Holihan's class did an outside review activity before testing on cells. Students participated in multiple rounds to determine whether their items were living or non-living and if items belonged to one of the cellular levels of organizations.
Here are some pictures of cell projects created by students in Ms. Holihan’s class. Students presented their project in class.
