Festive First Graders
November 15th edition
Arrival
Thank you for getting your child/children to school on time. It really helps them to have a great day. Having them arrive at 7:30 gives them enough time to get all the way to first grade, unpack, and be in the classroom for the pledges. Way to go! Keep it up!
SCIENCE
Students are working in groups on making a sail that will actually sail. They are learning about the properties of materials and how they can help or hinder the sail. Students are very excited about this part of the curriculum and learn a lot about The Engineering Process. Remember to ask your child about the things that they are learning in science.
MATH
First graders are practicing many skills this semester. They are working on how to make a number many different ways. Students are learning to double numbers to help them add or subtract. Using manipulatives help many of them see how numbers are made or taken apart. We will be starting a Geometry Unit very soon. Students will be using pattern blocks for many of the activities and assignments.
READING/LANGUAGE ARTS
Students are really doing well in reading. Many of them have really improved. This is because they are practicing at home. You have been seeing a "book in a bag" like the one in the picture. It usually comes with a green comprehension slip. This helps us to know if students are retaining things. Also, please make sure you send back any book the next day. Even if your child didn't read the book, please send it back. We usually don't have extras that they can share and we read them several times at teacher table or with partners.
Lunch Time
Reminders
Please remember that students should not bring GLASS containers in their lunchboxes. This is for their safety as well as the safety of other children.
LOST AND FOUND
Our Lost and Found is sure getting full. There are lots of expensive sweatshirts and jackets that don't have names. Please, Please, Please label EVERYTHING that your child has. So many nice things get DONATED at the end of each month instead of finding its owner.
RECESS RECESS RECESS
First graders WILL go outside if the temperature is ABOVE 32 degrees. Please listen to the weather report and have them dress appropriately. I know many students don't wear jackets because they are just running from their car into the school, but 30 minutes outside can get pretty cold for them. Also, we will not let them stay inside because they don't have a jacket. We don't have enough staff to supervise them. The office staff cannot watch them either since they have many things to do to keep our school running smoothly. Thanks for your help in this matter.
Canned Food Drive
Mathews is holding a canned food drive. They are collecting any canned goods that you can donate. These can include vegetables, soups, canned fruit, peanut butter, etc. Students may also bring in bags of rice or beans. Please NO PERISHABLES and NO GLASS! We are hoping that every student can bring in 2 cans to meet our Mathews Goal. This drive is from November 7th thru November 27th.
