From the Principal's Desk
The weather was beautiful this weekend. I hope you were able to get outside and spend time doing the things you enjoy.
There are great things happening at Cora L. Rice ES and there are several things planned for this month. The PTO is sponsoring a Trunk or Treat event that will be fun for the entire family. We will also have a coat and backpack give away at the trunk or treat. Volunteers and donations are needed.
On Monday, October 31st we are having our vocabulary parade. Please read the provided information carefully so that students are keeping to the guidelines. We are looking forward to seeing the students bring words to life.
There have been some updates to the PGCPS calendar that has turned student 1/2 days to virtual learning days, so please make note and mark your calendars.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Working together we will continue to make a difference in the lives of our students, staff, families and community.

PGCPS Virtual Learning Days
The Maryland State Department of Education recently approved the PGCPS virtual day instruction plan for snow days and teacher professional days this school year.
What does this mean for students?
There will still be snow days. The school calendar includes three snow days in case of inclement weather. However, if schools are closed for more than three days, then we can convert to virtual teaching and learning to avoid adding more school days in June.
All students will attend school virtually from home on Nov. 7, Jan. 25 and March 31. This will provide teachers with additional time for end-of-quarter grading and planning.
While we are grateful for in-person learning this school year, virtual learning allows for innovation to maximize teaching and learning opportunities. We are excited to implement virtual learning in these unique ways this school year to best meet the needs of our students and staff.
Community Schools Needs Assessment
All Community Schools staff, families and community partners are required to take this survey. At your earliest convenience, please take a few minutes and complete this one for our school. The deadline has been extended to October 28th. We are aiming for 80% of our families to respond.

Vocabulary Parade
On October 31, 2022 Cora L. Rice Elementary School will hold our annual Vocabulary Day
Parade. This parade is part of our school’s continuing emphasis on vocabulary
development. It is our hope that students will enjoy this activity while increasing their vocabulary, and we hope that all students in Pre- K-5 will create a costume, t-shirt or hat.
Resources
Communication is Key
- Teachers can be reached via ClassDojo or email.
- Teachers have 48 hours to respond to family communication.
- During the instructional day, teachers and instructional staff are focused on students. Therefore, teachers will not receive parent calls, unless scheduled, during the instructional day.
If the concern cannot be resolved after speaking with the teacher, then contact the grade level administrator.

5 Self-Care Tips and Ideas for Parents
Now that you’re aware of the benefits that self-care can bring to your life, it’s time to make a game plan! Try these five self-care tips and activities for adults so you don’t have to sacrifice your health to maintain your busy parenting schedule:
- Sleep is a key component of both emotional and physical self-care, yet so many parents neglect it. Aim to get at least seven hours of sleep every night, if possible.[11]
- Use this self-care assessment from NAMI to help you discover which elements of self-care you’re lacking and pinpoint how to improve.[6]
- Try to do one thing every day that improves your mental or physical health in some way. You could, for example, go on a walk after dinner or call a loved one you haven’t seen in a while.
- Check out this list of the best self-care apps that make a few minutes of well-being just a tap away.
- Self-reflection is also a crucial part of self-care, so brainstorm what you’re currently missing and how to best take care of yourself.[8] Put together a self-care journal and reflect every day on how you took care of your health.
