Reading and its Correlation to Success in School

When the bell rings at 3:18, many of our children are looking forward to engaging in activities that are vastly different from the activities they did during the school day. For some students, reading is "something you do at school." It is our goal to develop readers for life! There are many reasons for children to read outside of the school day. Click on this article for 5 positive effects reading has on the brain.

When students say they do not like to read, they haven't found the right book or series. Here is a list of some books that our children may enjoy.

Grade 3: 39 Clues Series, Amber Brown Series, Geronimo Stilton Series, A to Z Mysteries, Amelia Bedelia Series, Cam Jansen Series, Boxcar Children's Mysteries, Clementine, Cupcake Diaries, Flat Stanley, Fancy Nancy Series, Judy Moody, Junie B. Jones, Katie Kazoo Switcharoo, Magic Tree House, Mr. Putty and Tabby, Ballpark Mysteries,

Grade 4/5: Frindle, Matilda, Number the Stars, Amulet, My Weird School Daze, Percy Jackson, The Chronicles of Narnia, Wonder, Auggie & Me, Fish in a Tree, The One and Only Ivan, Whatever After, City of Ember, Little House on the Prairie Collection, Dork Diaries, Goosebumps Series, Spiderwick Chronicles, The Island of the Blue Dolphins, Andrew Clements Series, Rules, James and the Giant Peach, Bridge to Terabithia, Shiloh, Charolette's Web, Smile, Harry Potter.

Wellness Corner

March is National Nutrition Month…

The Sussex Avenue School Wellness Committee recently had students complete a short survey about school lunches to help give our kids a voice in healthy meal choices. The results will be shared with the head of food services to use to help plan our monthly menus.

Here is a link to the US Department of Agriculture’s Website with some good information on healthy nutrition:
