News From Mrs. Jose's Room
Week 5 September 8-11th 2015
What Have We Been Up To?
Math
Last week we finished our first math unit on Place Value. This week we will be practicing our math rotations, working in our math notebooks as a whole group, and we will be moving into our next unit of Addition and Subtraction with whole numbers.Reading
This week we will be getting reading partners. Good reading partners care about each other's reading lives. Good reading partners will share reading habits, talk about books they've read, summarize and share an author's message, and they will help each other when they get stuck.
Writing
As we come to the end of our unit to launch writing habits we will pick one story from our notebook to publish. Together we will move through the revision process and next week we will have our first published pieces to add to our class library.
Science
Last week we had a blast moving through the scientific method to find out how many drops of water a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter could hold. In the end we ended up learning about surface tension.
Looking Ahead At Our Next Units
Math - Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers
Reading - Analyzing Characters
Writing - Personal Narratives
What Can You Do At Home?
Play Rock, Paper, Scissors, Add or Multiply (we do this almost everyday in class. It's fun, easy, and helps us build math fact fluency).
When we begin writing personal narratives students will be writing about memories from their own lives. You can help them now by looking through old photos or by reminiscing about good, sad, happy, or exciting times to relive memories they can be inspired to write about.
Papers went home last week about MobyMax. If you have internet access at home students can login to read and practice math skills. https://www.mobymax.com/signin
Place Value Scoot
Instead of sitting down to review before our assessment last week we did a scavenger hunt and found problems around the room that we had to solve. The mathematicians pictured above were really engaged in their learning!
