The Importance of Meiosis

Learn about meiosis and how it is important !!

The importance of meiosis is that it enables genetic diversity. It allows chromosome pairs with the same genes switch pieces of information in a process called recombination. When it produces among sexual organisms it can help make a species population more stable.

STEP-BY-STEP MEIOSIS

Prophase I - just like in mitosis , during prophase , DNA condensation occurs , the nuclear envelope and nucleoli disappear , and the spindle starts to form. The big difference is what is going on with the chromosomes themselves.

Metaphase I - it is during prophase I and metaphase I that genetic recombination is occuring. As soon as anaphase I starts , genetic recombination is over.

Anaphase I - When tetrads pull apart and chromosomes with two chromatids move toward the poles.

Telophase I - Chromosomes with two chromatids decondense and a nuclear envelope reforms around them. each nucleus is now a haploid.

ASEXUAL OR SEXUAL ??

Meiosis does not occur during asexual reproduction. Meiosis is the process of producing gametes (eggs and sperm).
