MES students entered school on January 4th after their Christmas break with refreshed smiles and renewed energy to continue their K-6th education. We invite you to enjoy our new online Shiner Times. In this issue you will find several students who share with us their New Year's Resolutions. Ms. Chalk tells us of her hopes for her students in 2016. Girl's Basketball is bouncing along, and Cheerleading Camp will be a leap of fun! Don't miss how you can support JUMP FOR HEART to give someone a new start.

5th Graders Make New Year's Resolutions

Lady Shiners SHINE ON!

by Kendra Collins, Lexie Hylton, Macie Teke, and Natalie Rupp

BOUNCE.... What's that? It's Lady Shiners coming for you. The Lady Shiners basketball team started practice on Jan. 4th. The 5th/6th grade girls practice 3:15-5:00 Mon.-Fri. for two weeks. You might think that is easy, but you are wrong! We probably have the hardest coach in the whole world. It's another year of layups and suicides. The girls have been exhausted from all the running, and that is why the whole team is sore. The pain will pay off when they play their first games at Aurora Elementary, Saturday, January 23rd, 5th gr. at 10:00, and 6th gr. at 11:00.

Coach Halbig, played basketball as a Lady Shiner in 5-8th grade and then as an SDHS Lady Knight all 4 high school years. Defense was her favorite part of the game. Coach Halbig says, "This is a fun group of girls! They also work hard and try everything I ask them to do. I definitely think they will learn a lot this year and hopefully we will win some games too." These girls will not let their coach down. They have already learned Coach Halbig's first lesson, "Do you see a letter "I" in the word T-E-A-M? No, because it takes everyone on the team doing their part on both offense and defense. If someone isn't playing with teamwork first, it upsets the team balance."

Ms. Chalk Makes Learning Fun!

by Abrie VanWinkle & Michaela Theetge

Ms. Chalk is one of our fourth grade teachers at Manchester Elementary. Ms. Chalk tells us of her hopes for her students in 2016. “My hope is that they leave my classroom as happy, confident, and successful learners.” Ms. Chalk teaches her students a lot of different things that prepare them for fifth grade. One day it may be watching baby owlets hatch on her smart board in real time; another day her students may line up to become the measurements on a make believe number line to teach them the value of fractions. Ms. Chalk smiles as she says, "Fourth graders can be independent, and they are very eager to learn. Fourth grade is the perfect place for me. I love watching my students learn.” Ms. Chalk's students LOVE to watch her teach!
