Why Personalized Learning?
HSSD promotes “Personalized Learning” classrooms geared toward making learning more individualized, engaging and collaborative.
You will or may have already noticed our fourth grade classrooms and many classrooms district-wide do not look traditional with desks in rows or even students having "assigned" seats. You may notice that students are challenged to lead their own learning by goal setting, rather than totally teacher directed. Assessments and feedback are not exclusively done through paper tests, quizzes and book work. Rather, our goal is to challenge students to display their learning in a more personalized way, such as with hands-on activities, project-based learning or creating with technology. Students are able to have a voice and choice in their learning based on their strengths, experiences and needs. Our classroom environment supports this philosophy by providing students with the ability to flexibly learn in small group, whole group, 1:1, and independently.
These are just some of the many improvements educators are making in order to make learning more individualized, engaging and collaborative. Trust that these methods have been made with each and every child in mind and backed by research. As jobs and our world changes, our classrooms and methods of teaching are adapting, in order to provide students with the skills they need to be successful in the 21st Century. Due to technology, many jobs students may pursue in the future may not even exist yet! Our goal is to challenge learners to be adaptive, critical thinkers.

Living Our Day as Writers
This year we will be working toward ‘living the life of a writer’. One of the ways we do this is to keep a writer’s notebook. Our writer’s notebook is a collection of our thoughts, ideas, words, and questions. We use them to help write stories or to record our thinking and learning.
We will decorate the writer’s notebook cover at school. Please help your child collect pictures, words, or other interesting things that represent them and set them aside so when we are ready to decorate, you will not have to scramble at the last minute to find pictures. I also ask that you send in copies of pictures as they will be cut up and glued onto the notebook.
Snacks and Water Bottles
Please send a quick healthy snack and water bottle to school each day with your child. His/her body needs food/water to stay focused on learning! Snacks should be small and prepackaged. If utensils are needed to eat, please send that with your child. Water is the only liquid permitted in the bottles. Fruit juices, Propel, Gatorade or any other sugary drinks attract ants. I thank you in advance for not sending these to school. Water bottles should also be the kind if knocked over will not spill. We need to be extra careful around the iPads and excessive spilling of water may cause the growth of mold. I'd really appreciate avoiding that.
