Te Aroha Primary Newsletter
Term 3 Week 1 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou
Welcome to the start of the third school term of 2021.
We are half way through the year with only 19 school weeks left of teaching time in 2021.
It is therefore very important that we have all children at school regularly if they are not sick. If they are sick then they need to stay home to get well before returning to avoid making others sick.
This is an action packed term so children and teachers will be very busy.
Our PTA is organising the annual Duck Day race in September and we ask that all families please support this fundraiser by selling the tickets which were sent home last term. They are also organising the Family Photo shoot fundraiser in September so look out for this information which will be sent home soon.

Helpers Wanted for PMP
Our school runs a PMP programme for Rooms 1 & 2 in the Junior school. Mrs Diane Hazelton runs this programme but it only works efficiently when there are volunteers who are willing to help with the sessions.
We are very fortunate to have a lovely group of ladies who come along on a roster basis and support Diane. Due to changes in some ladies' circumstances we have vacancies for three helpers on Friday afternoons. The session time is 1.40 – 2.40pm. This would involve being on call once a fortnight – five times a term.
Please contact the school office if you are interested or if you know of someone who might be interested and Diane will get in touch with you. This is open to parents, grandparents or friends of the school. Thank you so much.
Access to Period Products
We are very pleased to be part of the Ministry of Education's programme to provide free access to period products for students.
This means we are able to order period products for young people to use for their whole cycle, based on an average of 20 items per young person per month. There will be a mix of brands. Using these products is not compulsory. Young people are free to make their own choices about what they use and can continue to bring products from home if they prefer.
Mrs Brittenden will be organising this, with products being discreetly given to students - you can get in touch with her by ringing the school office (07) 8848803, sending her an email dp@tearohaprimary.school.nz, sending a note or coming in to see her to let her know that you would like your child to receive free period products each month.
At the moment, we have a range of pad brands available.

Classroom Round Ups
A big welcome back everyone and a special welcome to MIa, Evelyn, Logan and Louis who join Room 1 today. This week our focus sounds are s,a, t and p. It is important that we know the sounds these letters make, how to write them as well as words that start with these sounds. Our phonological awareness focus of the week is syllables. In Maths we are learning to sort objects into groups, display our findings in a pictograph and then talk about our findings. We will start each day by introducing ourselves in Maori, initially with support and then independently. Weather permitting we will be practising for Cross Country each day. Children are asked to bring a spare pair of shorts and a t-shirt to school each day to run in. The Reading Homework Books have changed this term and children can use their little notebooks to practise writing their words in them at home.

Welcome back, I hope everyone had a great holiday! It went quickly, that's for sure! We are excited to welcome Frankie, Michael, Boaz, Lauren and Otis from Room 1 who are joining us for the rest of the year. Our phonics work gets underway this week as we begin stage 4. Children will be able to blend and segment CVC words and will be able to hear, read and write the medial sound.
In Maths we are beginning with fractions, where children need to be able to recognise and find the symbols for half and quarter. They will also be able to find half and quarter of a number by sharing out equally. In writing our focus is to plan for our story and then to record a sentence/s to go with it. Some children are focusing on adding further detail to make their story more interesting. We hit the ground running with reading and continue with our decodable readers this term. Reading homework will be sent home this week and bookbags/ books need to be returned to school everyday. In a few weeks we have our school cross country. We will continue to practice daily, weather permitting of course! Please ensure your child has a pair of shorts and a t-shirt from home in their bag each day to run in if they wish to do so. We are looking forward to an awesome term ahead.

Welcome to Term 3! I hope you all have had a fantastic school holiday break. I am looking forward to catching up with Room 3 about their adventures.
Reading: This term we are continuing to have spelling and reading books come home from Monday through to Thursday. I am very grateful for the support that whānau give with this and we can see the progress that the tamariki are making.
Writing: We are looking more closely at giving detail in our writing. Room 3 is getting a chance to design and describe their own video game this week and I am looking forward to seeing all the creative ideas!
Maths: This week will see Room 3 revising skip counting, instant recall of basic facts and balancing equations to 20. We are also learning a new Maths game this week that will be part of our weekly rotations.
Reminders for the week: We are welcoming the lovely Aniwa Armstrong into Room 3 for term 3 and 4. Mrs Armstrong will be covering my release day every Friday and I know the children will love having her in our class. Our library day continues to be Friday this term. We also begin to train for Cross Country. Please remember you can pop in and see me, contact me via Seesaw and email mswan@tearohaprimary.school.nz
I hope you all have a fantastic first week back!
Rm 5 Miss Entwisle

Rm 6 Mrs Bankier
Welcome back to Term 3. I am excited to be back at school and with Room 6 again! I will be working part time for the first part of the term increasing to full time by the end of the term.
This term we will be learning about communication in our topic 'Let's Talk', this can be in many forms through speaking, art, animals, plants... An exciting topic to explore as a class.
Our other learning areas this term will be covering:
Writing - We will be learning to write persuasive text sharing opinions and expressing our point of view. This will lead us in speech writing and later in the term writing instructions.
Reading - We will be learning to find detail in texts to improve our comprehension.
Maths - This term's focus is addition and subtraction knowledge and strategy learning. We will be focusing on our basic facts recall and problem solving skills. Our strand area for the first part of the term is probability.
Our Library day is Tuesday again this term.
We will be practising for cross country everyday for the first part of the term so it will be a good idea to send running shoes for this.
I'm looking forward to an amazing term. If you have any questions please make contact with me. kbankier@tearohaprimary.school.nz
Rm 7 Mrs Paul
Welcome back everyone and I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. It was great to receive emails with work some of the children had taken upon themselves to do during the holidays. It warms my heart to see so many enthusiastic learners.
This week we will begin the term by celebrating the Olympics which is always an exciting time. We will unpick the Motto and values and look at how they can relate to us. Our reading work will also be based around this and we will be using Technology to produce some great work. In writing we will start with writing reports on the Olympic Games and then leading into persuasive writing. Maths will see us taking another look at fractions.
Cross Country training will start this week so a set of old clothes would be a great idea. The grass is bound to get wet and mucky. Shoes are also a good idea although some children prefer to run in bare feet.
