Cherokee Elementary School
CES November Tribe Edition 2021
Principally Speaking....
As the Fall season is upon us, the cool crisp air, leaves, and sweater weather bring us to the season of thankfulness. October was a month of recognizing breast cancer awareness, Cherokee's Homecoming activities, remembering to just say NO to drugs during Substance Abuse Awareness Week, and Childhood Cancer Awareness. I believe fun was had by all! This month starts our 2nd 9 weeks grading period. The Powerschool app is available to monitor student progress. If you need assistance with this, please contact your child's teacher.
November is fairly a short month, which means we will not have a Fall Festival this year, BUT a Christmas Celebration is in the works as we plan to invite our stakeholders to our campus at some capacity if feasible!!! More information to come.
Students are encouraged daily during our morning announcements, faculty & staff positive talks, and daily programs such as Rhithm App. Check out the video for more information here... https://vimeo.com/440356736. Teachers previously had the option to keep their students in the rooms to eat, but now all classrooms have resumed to the cafeteria for lunch. As always, I encourage you to communicate with your child's teacher, encourage and work with your child, and give them positive feedback! It truly takes all of us as a TEAM to make student learning successful. We appreciate your cooperation and support in advance.
Thankful and Grateful for our CES Tribe Family. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. Tfuqua@colbert.k12.al.us or 256-359-6422
Sincerely,
Miss Fuqua
Counselor's Corner
Happy November from the counseling office!
It’s so hard to believe that we are already in November! We have had a very busy year so far, and I know that it has been incredibly challenging in so many ways for everyone. We have had many changes this school year, and we are all still getting adjusted to all the stress that change can bring.
Due to the stressful nature of the school year, I encourage you and your students to practice some self care as we move into the holiday season. Self care is when we take a break from our normal schedules and routines to do an activity that will rejuvenate us. As the saying goes, “We cannot pour from an empty cup.” Our students are no different. They cannot complete all the tasks expected of them, if they are experiencing a great deal of stress or anxiety.
What is self care? What are some examples?
Take a walk
Watch the sunset. . . .or sunrise
Take a nap
Watch a favorite movie or tv show
Eat a meal together as a family
Make a meal as a family
Make a list of 10 things you are thankful for
Create an art project
Listen to your favorite music
Write. . .it doesn’t matter the topic
Self care is different for everyone, and that is ok. One major misconception is that we have to spend money on self care. That is false! The important thing is that you take care of your students and yourself--whatever that looks like! We are seeing so many students struggling right now. I encourage you to talk to your students about their feelings. Creating an open line of communication and support system with self care can make such a big difference. It is truly the little things that matter.
As always, I am here for support if you or your students need anything! I wish you all a season of thankfulness, rest, and self care!

Reading News!
We are excited to begin our After School Tutoring Program at CES. We are hoping this program will bridge the gap due to instruction lost during COVID. Teachers will also be completing CBM (Curriculum Based Measurements) STAR Progress Monitoring to address Reading deficiencies. To also help bridge the gap, Mrs. Burns will be pulling groups and pushing into classrooms to work with students.
Remember to read every night!
Mrs. Burns, Reading Interventionist
Mrs. Wilcoxson, Reading Specialist
Library News
I’m proud of the students for reading, visiting the Library Media Center each day as needed to check out books, and for showing courtesy and library citizenship in how they use the LMC and help others. I have given out many “Caught Being Good” clips to students for good deeds without being asked. Thank you for encouraging your child/children to read by discussing their books with them and teaching them to care about others.
