WHAT'S HAPPENING
AJS School Council Meeting
Ardrossan Jr. Sr. High will be hosting our regularly scheduled School Council meeting on Monday, November 22 at 6:30 p.m. There will be 2 formats that you can access. Either in-person(following COVID protocols ie. Masking, hand sanitizing and physical distancing in our Library) or virtually using Google Meets.
Please RSVP to michelle.hothem-bumbry@eips.ca by no later than Monday, November 22 at noon and indicate if you are attending in person or via Google Meet with your e-mail address.
A Google meeting link will be emailed out by 6:00 p.m. on Monday to those that RSVP. Please find the agenda and minutes from our previous meeting below. We hope that you can join us.
Student Council Events
AJS Spirit/Grad Wear
The online store for the Ardrossan Spirit Wear as well as GRAD 2022 apparel is now live. Below is the link. It is also posted on our website. Please note, payment must be made at the time of order.
The store will be open November 15 – December 5, 2021. Items are anticipated to arrive in late January. Once we have the items, we will sort and distribute them through the office.
Christmas Gift Ideas - AJS Swag!
We have some amazing items for sale that would make great Christmas gift ideas!
Please log into PowerSchool, under Student Fees, to find the form for purchasing AJS SWAG. The form will be available from November 1 to December 8. Once the orders are closed, we will contact you for pick up at the office for the week of December 13. Payment must be made at the time of order. Check under the “paid” tab for confirmation of order and payment.

EIPS: Waiver of Fees
If circumstances exist where you are unable to pay your child's fees, you can apply to have certain fees waived using the:
- Application for Waiver of Fees (505-1) (Parents)
If parents/independent students are not eligible to have fees waived, payment options may be made with the school’s administration and/or the Director of Student Transportation.
A completed application form with supporting documents, marked CONFIDENTIAL, can be sent by:
- Scan and email PDF files to fees@eips.ca;
- Deliver to any EIPS school office in a sealed envelope addressed to the Secretary-Treasurer; or
- Mail to Elk Island Public Schools

In Social 7, we're finalizing our study of the fur trade.
Mr. Clark’s Social 8 class is writing a persuasive essay and getting ready for their chapter 3 exam next week.

In Social 9, we're learning how to verify the reliability of online sources. We're preparing a guide that will help others to do the same.

- Études sociales 8 - Monsieur Laliberte's class is working on a research project about Renaissance characters. Students will eventually become these characters.

Your Future: Post Secondary and Career Fair
Thinking about attending post-secondary school after graduation? Exploring career options? Not sure on the career or sector? Plan to attend this year’s hybrid Your Future: Post-Secondary and Career Fair on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2021—the event is free and recommended for all students in grades 9 to 12.
The in-person portion of the event brings together a wide variety of colleges, universities, polytechnic and private schools, and sector experts in one place. The in-person event will follow the provincial Restrictions Exemption Program, as well as adhere to Alberta Health Services and local guidelines. As such, guests will need to show proof of vaccination and identification to attend. The virtual component will include additional opportunities to attend sessions from numerous colleges, universities and career sector experts.
Participating students and family members in either the in-person or virtual sessions will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from post-secondary and career vendors, ask questions, talk to experts about various career sectors, learn about future career trends and much more.

WISEST Set STudent Conference
On Saturday, November 20, WISEST presents the virtual SET Conference for girls and gender diverse students in grades 10-12 who are curious about careers in science, engineering and technology (SET).
Students will:
- Gain insight into different career paths in science, engineering and technology and related University of Alberta programs.
- Explore SET through virtual lab tours and activities.
- Meet undergraduate and graduate-level university students and learn what it’s like to be a student in science, engineering or technology.
- Meet STEM professionals and speak with inspiring mentors.
All girls and gender diverse students in grades 10-12 are welcome at SET. The registration fee is only $15/student for the full day or $10/student for half the day (either morning OR afternoon). Register early: The conference is limited to only 100 student participants.
CAREER Spotlight Agriculture - Plant Systems

Join us to learn more about careers in agriculture, specifically those related to plants. Hear from industry professionals about their personal career journey and what they love most about their work!
The agriculture industry is one of the biggest in Alberta and includes a variety of different areas related to plants. Some examples include horticulture and greenhouse operations, vertical and urban farming, aquaponics and hydroponics, crop research and development, agronomy and so much more. Learn about a variety of exciting careers and have all your questions answered and potentially win some prizes.
Young Women in Trades & Technologies – Mentorship Series: Industrial Trades
Join CAREERS: The Next Generation to learn about pursuing a career in the skilled trades, connect with other young women who share similar interests and receive important information on how you can land an awesome paid internship. Meet tradeswomen who are currently leading the way in the industry, as they share their career path stories and help you to navigate the career options that suit you best.
Examples of industrial trades include welding, gas fitter, steam fitter-pipefitter, industrial mechanic (millwright), ironworker, sheet metal worker and more!

SHAD 2022
Shad Canada is a STEAM and entrepreneurship program for students in grades 10 and 11. The program attracts students with high aptitudes for risk taking, curiosity, excellence and resilience, and prepares them to take on social and economic challenges. The month-long, summer program includes a real-world design challenge that asks students to work on issues such as food security, water management and waste. SHAD2022 will take place in person July 3-29, 2022. The application deadline is Dec. 6, 2021. There is a cost to register, but bursaries are available.
