Music and Dance History

Merengue is sometimes called the nation dance of Dominican Republic. This type of music was influenced by the Cuban music and dance called Upa Habanera. Its been the music choice in the Dominican since mid 1800s. Authentic Merengue is more about step patterns rather than drama and style. This dance's turns are casual walking steps rather than the spin turns that are in Salsa.
