4th Grade News
English/ Language Arts
We are on a roll with our guided reading groups. We have begun to switch for guided reading groups so your child may be going to another teacher. We have studied several aspects of fictional text, including main idea/theme, inferences and characterization. We are now moving in to non-fictional text. We are starting y learning about parts of a book and will then move to non-fiction text features. In writing we have completed writing “spooky stories” and publishing those. We really enjoyed writing and sharing these. Stay tuned to read about the things we are thankful for.
Thank you for your support!
Math
We have wrapped up our study of addition and subtraction. Please continue to study these basic addition and subtraction facts with your student. We have also studied patterns. We are currently moving in to multiplication and division. We started by reviewing basic facts and looking at factors and multiples. We will learn how to multiply a four digit number by a one digit number as well as a two digit number by a two digit number. Please work with your child to make sure that basic multiplication facts are fluent to help ensure mastery of these skills.
Science
Our study of organisms is wrapping up with seed dispersal and life cycles. We will then move in to our unit on weather. We will start by studying the weather cycle. Did you know that we may be drinking the same water that the dinosaurs drank? We will then discuss clouds, severe weather, weather instruments, forecasting and using and understanding weather maps.
Social Studies
We have completed our study of the ancient history of our nation. We studied how people migrated here from Asia, the Native Americans that were the first settlers of our country and the need for exploration and expansion from Europe. We are moving in to the settlement of the United States by various countries in Europe including Spain, France, and England. We will learn about how England formed a permanent settlement in our country in the coming weeks as well as how that settlement evolved and changed in to the United States of the 19th century.
