The Falcon Report
February 17, 2017
Welcome!
From the District Administrator's Office
I am sure you have heard in the news reports about proposals for our 2017 - 2019 State Budget, including Governor Walker's proposed budget. A number of these current proposals appear they will be beneficial to the Flambeau School District and public education in general. In these early stages, it is difficult to say exactly how they may impact us as these are all still proposals. We will not know exactly what our funding will be until later this year when the legislature passes and the Governor signs an approved budget.
For our 2017-2018 budgeting process, we are well under way. Not knowing exactly what our funding from the State will be presents a bit of a challenge to us. We do need to prepare a budget for next year, however. We continue to monitor updates and gather information so we are building a realistic budget.
There are some other non-budgetary proposals being presented as well. One proposal our School Board has interest in is the repeal of the requirement to not start school until September 1. Our Board would like to have local control in determining what would be the best start date for us rather than having a State-imposed requirement.
I encourage you to continue to watch and listen to the developments of the State budget. It will definitely impact how we deliver our educational experience to our children.
-- Mr. Hanson
From the Elementary Principal's Office
We had the gym full for Valentine’s Day as Mr. Podgornik was leading the the elementary students in different jump roping activities for Jump Rope for Heart. This activity is another way in which our community reaches out to help others. Great job to the students, parents, and staff for making this a success again and were able to raise over $5,000 by getting pledges/donations. Thank you to those of you who have pledged to our students this year! Just a few of the pictures from that day are below, but look for more on Flambeau's social media pages!
There will be another reading night from 6-7 p.m. on February 20th and I hope to see many of you there again. It is wonderful to see so many of our families at reading night to support programs offered at the school.
This is one of my favorite times of the year with playoff basketball and wrestling taking place. I wish all of our teams the best of luck for tournament play. I remember as an elementary student watching many of the boys teams at Flambeau in the 80’s playing in front of sold out gyms that were rocking with crazy fans and loud pep bands. Going and seeing that '86 boys team at the State Tournament allowed me to set a goal that I was going to work as hard as those players did so when I was in high school, my team would be playing in Madison. So if you have a chance, take a child to cheer on our teams which may also allow them to dream of playing at the State Tournament.
-- Mr. Ross
From the Middle/High School Principal's Office
Each year the Rusk County Youth Council (RCYC) sponsors the Teen Leadership Academy, where students with leadership potential are selected to participate in workshops and trainings throughout the school year. Teen Leadership Academy (TLA) consists of two goals: improving leadership skills and creating and implementing an action plan or project. The workshops and trainings use interactive, hands-on activities focused on topics that all leaders need and use. This year, Flambeau’s leadership team identified one area of concern or growth within our community and school: Respect.
Our leadership team has been working closely with Jeremy Allard to create Flambeau’s very own Respect Retreat. The retreat will be held at school, during school hours, on Tuesday, February 28th. Participants will be freshman and sophomores. During the morning session, Jeremy Allard and Julie Bever from ICAA will walk students through a poverty simulation, and in the afternoon our leadership team has planned games and discussions revolving around their topic of “respect". We are looking for 25 volunteers to help facilitate small groups of students that morning during the poverty simulation. Volunteers would need to be available from 8:15 a.m. to noon that day. If you are interested, please call Danita Everett or Erica Schley at 532-3183. We very much appreciate you taking time out of your day to spend quality time with our students!
February 28th is also the statewide ACT exam for all juniors. More information about the schedule for that day will be sent home to parents of juniors. Please be on the lookout in your mail.

Good luck to all as they work their way to the ultimate goal of participating at the State Tournament!

Flambeau Archery Club - Off To A Great Start!
The Flambeau Archery Club is officially off and running. We are well on our way of a great first season. We currently have 12 archers ranging from 6th – 9th grade. Archers have been working hard at learning and practicing the proper techniques of shooting archery. Archers have to learn the eleven steps of properly shooting a bow. Our archery club is a great experience that is teaching students beyond the bow. It’s also allowing archers to improve their upper body strength, balance, coordination, mental focus, and incorporates a sense of belonging.
In addition, there are multiple educational benefits to offering an archery club in school. Archery in schools has been proven to:
- Improve student motivation, attention, behavior, attendance, and focus.
- Achieve state and national educational standards regarding development of micro and macro motor ability
- Improve listening and observation skills.
- Engage each student in the educational process and develop relationships to promote graduation instead of drop-out.
This past Saturday, February 4th, Flambeau Archery Club participated in it’s first ever tournament. Archers represented Flambeau well. Although none of our archers placed, they all now have a starting point in which to improve from. I’m very proud of each and every one of my archers. They are an outstanding group of students.
