Kickboard All Stars
Congratulations to our top Kickboard recipients for the month of October: Nyree Washington, Nicholas Sigafoos, and Birama Seck. These three students earned numerous Kickboard points for exhibiting the 24 character strengths consistently throughout the month of October. As a result of their hard work, these students, as well as all eligible Junior High students, were able to spend their Kickboard points at the Owl Store prior to leaving for Thanksgiving break and will be given the opportunity to do so again in the month of December. Nicholas, Birama, and Nyree, thank you for all of your hard work; keep it up!
Spotlight on Literacy
Mt. Healthy City Schools will empower students to read & write universally, think critically, and communicate effectively.
Reading and Writing Universally
In order to preview vocabulary that they would encounter throughout their unit over the Roman Empire, Mr. Woosley's 7th grade Social Students students created Frayer Models. As the example below shows, students were asked to develop definitions, locate a visual representation, create non-examples, and use each of their vocabulary words in a sentence. By having students work with words in this way, Mr. Woosley has provided them with the opportunity to enhance their understanding of each word, thus supplying his students with the tools necessary to better comprehend their unit of study.
Communicating Effectively
Prior to leaving for Thanksgiving break, several fake patients showed up in Ms. Lanning's 8th grade Gateway to Technology class. Once these sick patients walked through the door, students practiced their Medical Detective skills by asking their patients questions about their illness and then listening and recording their responses. After completing their interviews, students collaborated with one another to provide their patients with a diagnosis as well as a recommend treatment for their illness. Below you see Adreona Scott, Blake Burroughs, Jukayla Graber, and Azariyah Bryant doing a fabulous job of using their disease dictionary as well as the responses from their patients to work with one another to draw conclusions about their patient's illness.
Thinking Critically
Ms. C. Wilson's 8th grade Science students had to use their critical thinking skills and apply their knowledge of Newton's 3 laws to create a car that successfully moved, using air as its force. Students were able to choose from a variety of elements to use in their design and could evaluate the progress of their design and make adjustments as necessary by completing a checklist along the way. Below you see that Eduardo Hernandez-Nicasio used a bottle, several lids, rubber bands, and wooden sticks to design his moving car.
