reasons for macbeth's downfall
Some may believe the person responsible for Macbeth’s downfall is his own wife. She is responsible for his death because she controlled him and drove herself mad. That affected him and caused his downfall. To further explain, in the text it states, “O, never Shall the sun that morrow see! Your face, my Thane, is as a book where men may read strange matters. To beguile the time, look like the time; bear welcome in your eye, your hand, your tongue; look like the innocent flower….” This quote is explaining that Lady Macbeth either wishes that darkness continue or Duncan not live through the night. This just starts the control that Lady Macbeth has over Macbeth. Another example would be, “ I pray you speak not. He grows worse and worse; Question enrages him. At once, good night. Stand not upon order of your going, but go at once.” This quote explains that everyone can hear Macbeth, which makes Lady Macbeth afraid that her husband will reveal too much, so she is demanding everyone leave at once. A final example would be, “Wash your hands, put on your nightgown look not so pale! I tell you yet again, Banquo's buried. He cannot come out on’s grave.” This quote is Lady Macbeth telling her husband that he doesn’t need to worry about Banquo and to stop looking so guilty. My overall opinion is that Lady Macbeth is very much at fault for Macbeth’s downfall. I believe that she brain washed him and he didn’t know what to do without her.
