Mariner Report
Volume 10 Issue 24
Message from the Principal
Our students are excited about participating in Read Across America. Read Across America is an annual reading incentive and awareness program that encourages all students in every school community to celebrate reading. Schools across the U.S. will participate in read-ins, special guest readers, or, perhaps, like our own Mariners, celebrate in a spirit week! I am including a list of activities that will, hopefully, enable your family to use some of your time together for reading. There are countless ways that families can celebrate and enjoy reading together – not only during the annual reading awareness program but on every day of the year!
READ ACROSS AMERICA
Suggested Family Activities
1. Have a family pajama party, complete with pajamas, snacks, and books. Older family members can read to younger ones and vice versa. If your children are older, you could select a chapter book or anthology of short stories or poems to read together by alternating readers.
2. Take the comics from the newspaper and cut up each individual strips. Scramble the panels and then see if your child can put the comic back in the proper sequence. Studies show that reading comic books is an excellent way to develop vocabulary!
3. Make a storybook with your child. The storyline does not have to be elaborate but should include characters, setting, a problem for the main character, and a solution. Construction paper or computer paper could be used. A collaborative effort is fun for children of all ages. You’ll be surprised by the results that can happen!
4. Let your young child “practice” reading a book and call a long-distance relative and have your child read the book to them to share their accomplishment.
5. Hold a family Read-A-Thon. Children who see their parents read are more likely to read. Set aside the evening for the family to read together. Stop every fifteen minutes to discuss what you are reading.

As the year goes on, make sure to remind students of expectations and continue to give them positive feedback. Here are some other tips that can help parents navigate this challenging time and support students in being successful learners!
Encouraging Ownership & Effort Check in with them regularly about how distance learning is going.Communicate with your kid's teacher, and encourage them to self-advocate for what they need. And model communication about your day, including the positives, challenges, and kindnesses.
Give detailed praise Instead of saying "good job," try giving specific details about your kid's work. If they tried hard, let them know you noticed. Have they made progress? Used a new technique? In what ways are their efforts kind, clever, beautiful, or insightful? Also, encourage a growth mindset, which means reminding students that it's not about being good or bad at something, but working toward getting better at it.
Get help when you need it.Communicate with the school about how things are going, leading with positives first. Everyone's doing their best, AND it's important for teachers to know what's working and not working for your student so they can get the help they need.
AVID Celebrations!
So many amazing students, doing so many amazing things. It is so hard to choose only two students. These two second graders have received a Shout Out Award because they are well organized! They always have everything to start their day and are ready to work.
Next week’s AVID skill is reading. We will be searching for first graders who are working hard learning to read.
