Timothy Ball News November 11-15
Welcoming all. Believing in all. Growth for all.
A Note from Mr. Ciochina
November is an exciting month with many important events coming up!
Our Second grade Grandparents & Special Person Day is on Tuesday, November 12 from 1:30-2:30 pm. There was a space on the RSVP form to indicate if your student may go home with their grandparent or special visitor. Also, if a student in another grade will be leaving early with the second grade sibling and visitor, a note must be sent in to school that morning. Later that evening, the second grade music program will be in our gym at 5:30 pm. Please avoid lining up in the car line on Tuesday until after 3:00 pm to give our visitors a chance to leave campus safely.
Over the next two weeks, students in grades three and five will be will be working on a reasoning test called InView. Please refer to the letter and FAQ’s that were sent home last week with specific testing dates for each grade level.
The Timothy Ball Spell Bowl team will compete at 5pm on Monday, November 18 at Wheeler Middle School. Best of luck to our spellers!
Veteran’s Day is Monday, November 11, and I thank all of the Veterans in our Timothy Ball community who have given and sacrificed so much for our nation and our safety. Our supplies for GI's drive led by our National Elementary Honor Society is starting next week -- check out the information in the flyer below to help support our troops!

Social-Emotional News from Mrs. Holok
Michelle Borba, an award-winning educational psychologist and an expert in parenting and character development, reports that empathy is a “powerful quality that halts violent and cruel behavior and urges us to treat others kindly.” Empathy comes naturally and early, which means our children are born with a built-in advantage for success and happiness. Although children are born with the capacity for empathy, it must be nurtured. This takes commitment and deliberate action every day. Dr. Borba is also the author of UnSeflie: Why Empathic Kids Succeed in Our All-About Me World, which can be used as a guide to raise empathetic children. Below is a list created by Dr. Borba to help our children cultivate both strong minds and caring hearts.
1. Talk feelings. Kids need an emotion vocabulary to discuss feelings and guidance to become emotionally literate. Point out feelings in films, books, or people and use emotion words.
2. Be an emotion coach. Find natural moments to connect face-to-face, listen, and validate your child’s feelings while boosting emotional literacy (“You look happy. You seem sad.”)
3. Point out the impact of uncaring. When you see lack of caring or unkindness, don’t be afraid to lay down the law and say ‘Not in this family.
4. Make teamwork and caring a priority. Insist that they consider others, even when it inconveniences them.
5. Teach: “Always look at the color of the talker’s eyes.” Kids must learn to read people’s emotions face to face, so enforce the “color of the talker’s eye” rule to help them use eye contact, and pick up facial expressions, voice tone and emotional cues.
6. Make kindness matter. Instead of, “I want you to be happy.” Stress, “I want you to be kind.”
7. Develop a caring mindset. Help your child see himself as kindhearted by praising the times he is.
