"The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon" Premiers at MM!

Marie Murphy's annual spring play took on a different look this year with actors performing from their homes and the performance being delivered virtually via a YouTube live stream, but the excitement and excellence were the same as they have always been!

"The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon" features the well-known stories of Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Rapunzel, Hansel & Gretel, and others, with a humorous, modern, and creative retelling of these tales. With every actor taking on a multitude of roles, costumes, and accents, the frenetic pace added to the fun! Director Ms. Janssen and Student Director Margot Swibel made creative use of the virtual performance medium to create interactions between the characters that were ingenious and hilarious, leaving the audience laughing throughout the school assembly performance on May 13.

Encore performances of "The Brothers Grimm Spectaculaton" are taking place TONIGHT, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, May 15 at 2:00 p.m. Please visit https://avoca37.org/ ten minutes before showtime for the link to the YouTube live stream performance.

Thank you to Mika, Arian, Margot, Elise, Hallie, Lucie, Lillian, Maggie, Zayaan, Aaliya, Tenzin, Madie, Kate, and Ms. Janssen for their hard work and dedication to making the school play a success!

Marie Murphy 8th Grade Updates

As our 8th graders wrap up their time as Avoca students, their end of the year tends to look a little different than other students as a result of bike trips, graduation, and other activities.

While a more comprehensive email will be sent to all 8th-grade parents on Monday, May 17 detailing graduation, here is some basic info.

  • 8th-Grade bike trip and picnic lunch at Skokie Lagoons will take place on Wednesday, June 2.
  • Graduation will take place Monday, June 7 at New Trier High School's Northfield Campus parking lot.
  • Guests can begin arriving at 5:00; the ceremony begins at 6:00. We anticipate the ceremony concluding at approximately 7:30.
  • Each graduate and family will be permitted one car to enter the lot. If family dynamics require a second car, a request can be made to Mr. Palcer.
  • The ceremony will feature a stage, a large video board, and an AM/FM audio broadcast for in-person guests to view the ceremony.
  • A YouTube live stream link will be provided to families and friends watching from home.
  • Weather permitting, graduates will be invited to sit with their fellow 8th-graders near the stage. Families will need to remain either by or in their cars.
  • The ceremony itself will look similar to previous MM graduations; student speakers, a video montage, adult speeches, awarding of diplomas, and music. It's the setting that is the biggest change.
  • Graduation fees can still be turned into the main office. These funds help offset the cost of the audio/visual components of the ceremony as well as provide gifts and keepsakes for our graduates.

The graduation committee has worked incredibly hard to create an experience for our graduates that is memorable and safe. Be sure to keep a lookout for the email from Mr. Palcer arriving on Monday, May 17 for more specific details.
