Poplar Grove Post
February 2018
NOTE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL:
Hello Poplar Grove Families,
January was full of surprises and we hope you enjoyed your snow days! We are back to school and hard at work to prepare for success. Thank you for your continued support and we hope you were able to make it to the Volunteer luncheon. Parents and family volunteers are part of what makes PGS such a great place.
January also brought another PGMS House Day! Students participated in large group dance off, ate lunch with their House, and reflected on the character trait of Courage. February’s House Day will focus on being a good Citizen, and we have some big plans! Keep an eye out for pictures on Twitter and Facebook!
Lastly we are still working hard to prepare for TNReady. As stated in the last Poplar Grove Post, TNReady will be in paper pencil format this year. Testing is not until Mid-April, but we are getting ready to rock it!

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF ENERGY DRINKS ON YOUTH
A recent study showed a link between energy drink consumption and mental health issues. The study involved individuals between the ages of 12-15. Symptoms such as elevated heart beats, difficulty sleeping, headaches, nausea, vomiting and seizures can be some symptoms experienced after energy drink consumption. PGMS does not allow energy drinks/coffee at school or during lunch for our students.
INFLUENZA UPDATE IN OUR SCHOOL
The CDC reports that this is one of the worst flu seasons in several years. Flu is widespread in 49 of 50 US states, including Tennessee. We have had students, teachers and staff at PGMS test positive for the flu. Taking all this into consideration, we have been lucky at our school. The absentee rate here has been pretty typical of what it normally is at this time of the year.

5TH GRADE NEWS:
The conversations they share with each other and the encouragement that they give one another blesses us as a team, and we think it blesses them as they pour into one another with words that are full of intentionality. It’s such a good reminder of the hearts and attitudes that we should all carry on with the people in our lives. Your kiddos are some of the sweetest on campus! We miss them when we’re out unexpectedly, and are so happy when we get to return to see their sweet faces!

Library Dedication Books
Would you like to honor someone (teacher, student, loved one) by donating a book to the PGMS Library Media Center in his/her name? This is a great way to commemorate your graduating 8th grader’s years at PGS, or celebrate a teacher or child’s birthday, or remember a lost loved one. Your child can come to the library and choose from one of next year’s VSBA nominated-books. An honor plate will be placed in the front of the book so that PGMS students will remember your honoree for years to come! Click here for the form to fill out.
A birthday book called Nothing But Trouble by Jacqueline Davies has been donated to the middle school library in honor of Kennedy Townsel's birthday, which was January 9th. This book is on next year's VSBA list. Kennedy has already had a chance to read it, so it is available in the library for checkout.
Miles Houck has generously donated these 4 titles on next year's VSBA list:
Towers Falling by Jewell Parker Rhodes, Mayday by Karen Harrington, Finding Fortune by Delia Ray, and Scythe by Neal Shusterman. These titles are available in the library for checkout.
Keira Yocum (along with her family) donated the book The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill to the library in honor of her sister Adriana's birthday, which was Jan. 26th. This book is also on next year's VSBA list and will be available for checkout just as soon as Adriana is finished reading it.
