The Fairview Connection
OCTOBER 7, 2022
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
October has arrived and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful week! I hope you’ve been enjoying the start to autumn. We’ve had a productive week of teaching and learning, and enjoyed showing off our smiles on Wednesday’s Picture Day.
Today is our first half-day institute of the school year. This time is extremely valuable for us as a staff to learn together about how we can best instruct and support our students. For today, staff are engaged in professional development on the topic of how to recognize, respond to and report bullying behavior that may come up at school, which is good timing as October is Bullying Prevention Month! In District 57, we take the prevention of bullying very seriously. All Kindergarten through 8th grade students participate in weekly classroom meetings/advisory meetings to build classroom community and provide strategies for students on how to prevent/handle potential bullying situations. This is done, in part, using the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit. These instructional materials offer an opportunity for students to share their feelings and opinions, to suggest solutions, and to learn to follow the rules and handle bullying situations appropriately. It also builds class community and cohesiveness and recognizes achievements and successes of the class as a whole.
We encourage any student or parent who is aware of a potential bullying situation to report the issue immediately to a staff member. This report will initiate an investigation. Whether or not the issue is found to be bullying, any behavior that does not follow school expectations will be addressed. For your reference, bullying is defined as intentional physical, verbal, or social aggression. It is often repeated over time and occurs when there is a real or perceived power imbalance. We want all students to feel safe and comfortable during their time at school, and we are committed to removing barriers that are preventing this for individual students or groups of students. For more information on this topic, please visit this link.
Looking forward to next week, several of our 5th grade students are running to be members of our Fairview Student Council Executive Board. The candidates for President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer will deliver their speeches to our students at an assembly on Friday. Students will then have an opportunity to vote for the candidates they feel will best represent them in these leadership roles. I am so proud of all students running for office as it takes courage and commitment to do so, and I wish them all the best of luck! This experience is a good way to teach students about elections and representation in government as well, which makes it very meaningful. For next week, I also want to remind you that there is no school this coming Monday, and on Thursday, October 13th, the PTO is having a Dine 'N’ Share at MOD Pizza. With the Bears game coming up on Thursday evening, it might be a good night to order out while simultaneously supporting Fairview, as a portion of all sales will go to our PTO. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
REMINDER FROM NURSE BRUNNING
This is a reminder that all medication, including cough drops or other over the counter medications require a Medication Form to be filled out by your child's health care provider. Medication is then to be brought to the health office by an adult so the nurse can administer accordingly. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Kelly Brunning, school nurse at kbrunning@d57.org.

STUDENT SIGN-IN/SIGN-OUT PROCEDURE
RAPTOR VISITOR MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
All visitors and volunteers are required to present a valid state-issued identification that will be entered into our system before gaining access to the school beyond the main office. Once you have successfully logged into the Raptor system a badge with your name and photo will be produced which must be worn while you are in our building.
We believe this safety procedure will keep our schools safer and provide instant information about who is in our schools in the event of an evacuation.
Please click here for sign-in instructions.
BUS BULLETIN
Throughout the year buses may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., vehicular congestion; train traffic, weather, mechanical issues, etc.). The district has been using Bus Bulletin for several years now and is confident that this online notification system is the best way to inform parents should the need arise. Click on the bus for more information and to register.
LUNCHROOM
Also, please write your child's name on their lunchbox and water bottle in permanent marker so if it gets lost, it can easily be returned to them.
