SIPLE SCOOP
DECEMBER 2021
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Siple Families,
I write to you today with a heavy heart in light of the events that transpired at Oxford High School this week. My prayers go to the families that lost loved ones, those that were injured, the students, staff, and community. Such tragedies remind us how important our safety protocols are that we have in place. I want to thank my Siple parents for understanding and supporting us for enforcing these protocols. Keeping our students and staff safe will always come before convenience. I appreciate your understanding.
As we move toward our highly anticipated winter break (Please note it's December 18 - January 3.) and the holidays we are working diligently to encourage the children to stay focused on their learning and good behavior while still enjoying the fun events of the season. This can be tricky for some students. I appreciate your help with this effort. Sleep is one of the best ways to help your child have a successful day at school. Please help your child get a good night's sleep by establishing or continuing to follow a regular bedtime.
Let me close by taking a moment to wish all of you a wonderful holiday season! It is such a pleasure to work with your children and you. Merry Christmas and a very Happy HEALTHY New Year!
Happy Holidays!

COOL TO CARE CAMPAIGN
It's time again to donate to the Cool To Care Campaign. This campaign benefits our local community through Outreach East as they work to help families in need. This year will be a little different. Outreach East cannot collect cans because they have changed their space. It will be cash donations only this year. Our building goal is to raise $1,000. If we reach this goal, we will have a special event for students. Please see the flyer below explaining the Cool to Care Campaign in greater detail. We hope your student will join us for the Cool to Care Spirit Days!
Thanks for helping!

Holiday Perspective
The Holiday season has arrived! It is a time for giving. A time for showing kindness. A time to reflect on the year. For some, this is the best part of the year; for others, it is the most challenging. Although the season is filled with family, friends, and food there are some children who really struggle with the holidays. That said, I want to give a little perspective to the perpetual optimists (like Elf).
The sights, sounds, and smells of the Holidays remind many of happy times, but to some children they can bring sadness because it may be the first holiday after a loss or separation. Many families travel, which can create stress on children that do not like schedules disrupted. People gather together, which is also challenging for the introverts in the family if there are large numbers of people.
To help children that are struggling, I suggest a few things. First of all, be aware of changes in your children (eating habits, secluding self, emotional outbursts). Sometimes all the extra stimulus overwhelm the senses. If you notice changes, then carve out some time to talk with your little ones. Allow your child to share their concerns in a sort of vent session without interruption. There may be tears or shouting. That’s ok! It’s actually healthy. By verbalizing these things children have the opportunity to recognize errors in their thoughts.
Secondly, go over schedules with your children that struggle with change. As you look at holiday travel and family filled days, recognize that your introverted children may need a place to retreat to recharge during the festivities. Build that in and talk with your children about how they can “take a break” during the fun.
Lastly, remember to fill your child’s love bucket. This looks different for everyone. For some kids this may be a hug, compliment, or movie together. Others may need an unexpected note of encouragement or a random act of kindness. We all receive love a little differently.
The holiday season is one in which we can draw closer together. Enjoy the time with family and friends. Remember that everyone is different, but that is what makes life beautiful. Treasure this time together as life is a wonderful gift.

STEM FUN
Happy Holidays from STEM Class. I love this time of year in technology class because there is so much material to use to celebrate the season.
The fourth grade students are using Google slides to create a slideshow about winter and the third graders are programming with the Grinch. The younger students are using technology to create pictures and use textboxes to label their designs. It is the perfect time of year for making snowmen and Christmas trees. The kindergarten students are still practicing the login process to use their Chromebooks. It is challenging for 5 and 6 year olds to enter emails and passwords, but we keep working on this each week. Hopefully they will all be able to do this independently in the next few months.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I am very easy to reach via email at ecarr@davisonschools.org. Have a wonderful holiday and winter break.
