MAP Testing (This Week)

MAP Testing Information – Kindergarten through Fifth Grade

MAP stands for “Measures of Academic Progress”. It is a computerized test that is adaptive – the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, the questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier.

We will be conducting the fall session of MAP testing for Grades 1 through 5 during the last couple of weeks in August into September. Kindergarten will begin testing after Labor Day.

Students in Grades K and 1 will use a headset and have the test read to them. All grades will be tested in reading and mathematics. Science will also be tested in Grades 3, 4, and 5. It is not a timed test, but most students will finish within 30 – 60 minutes.

The MAP testing will replace our week of IOWA/ITBS testing in April. The teachers will be able to discuss your child’s results at Parent Teacher Conferences in October. Teachers can use the growth and achievement data from MAP to develop targeted instructional strategies. Students will test again at the end of the year and there is a possibility that they will test in the winter as well. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Thank you.

Mrs. Anna Alexander

On Mondays, we take a Spelling Pre-Test using the words from the Regular Lists. If your child spells all the words correctly (not including the bonus word), I will send home the challenge list for them to study. Spelling tests are on Fridays.

The Spelling City website is a good tool to help your child study their spelling words. They can take practice tests, review the words, and play games. There is also a free app that can be downloaded.

Here is the link: http://www.spellingcity.com/Parker2ndGrade/.

Reading/Language Arts

We have weekly assessments in our Journeys Reading Series based on content that we are learning each week in the areas of vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, and phonics. We will split the tests and take 1/2 on Thursdays (vocabulary & comprehension) and 1/2 on Fridays (grammar & phonics).

Students will have more opportunities to practice the skills that we learn in class with the worksheets that I will be sending home this week. These worksheets will give the students more practice to prepare them for the weekly assessments.

The Chapter 1 test will be Tuesday, September 1st. I will send home the Chapter 1 Review and Practice on Monday so students can review the math skills that we have learned.

We will be finishing Chapter 2 - Jesus Christ Gives Us The Church this week and will have a Religion test on Friday, September 4th. Students will bring home their books and study guide on Thursday.

An additional online Study Guide can be found here: http://www.sadlierreligion.com/webelieve/

Toy Drive

Students may bring in new or gently used toys this week to be given to St. Vincent de Paul in honor of Mary's Birthday. Bishop Medley will be here to celebrate the Feast of the Birthday of the Virgin Mary at the 8:05 Mass on September 8th. Please join us for Mass if you are available.

2nd Grade Prayer Day

Thursday, Sep. 10th, 9:15am-2pm

2695 Jackson Bridge Road

Bowling Green, KY

We need drivers to take us to Gasper River Retreat Center and pick us up. Our room mother, Mrs. Herman, will be contacting parents to drive. Please make sure that you are current with Safe Environment & driving requirements. Contact Mrs. Zoellner in the office to check your status.

Lost River Cave Field Trip

We are in the process of planning our Fall field trip to Lost River Cave. We have confirmed the date on Monday, September 28th. Time has not been confirmed. More info to come...

Mass Offering

Just a reminder that if your child would like to bring money to put in the collection basket at Mass, they may bring it on Mondays or Tuesdays before Mass. I have collection envelopes in the classroom for them to use. Students may also write a special prayer intention and put in the collection basket.

September Mass Offerings will be given to Adopt-A-Backpack program.

Please remember to pack a snack for your child. We are always grateful for snacks given to the class for when one doesn't have a snack. We don't want anyone left out. Thanks! :)

Scholastic Book Orders

We are currently taking orders from the September Scholastic Book Order Catalogs. You may purchase books for your child by ordering online or sending in the order form along with check payable to Scholastic. Your purchases give our class points to purchase books for our classroom library. All Scholastic orders are due September 18th.
