SCC CAPS Healthcare Happenings...

February was filled with site visits, rotations, and continued work on CAPStone Projects!

Topics included:

  • Case Studies
  • CAPStone Project Work
  • Weeks 7 and 8 of Observation Rotations
  • Mid America Organ Transplant Site Visit
  • Guest Speakers: Will Klein and Chip Phelan
  • USP 800 Training

Case Studies

For February, associates worked with new group members and presented on two new case studies. The first surrounding the respiratory system and the second on the cardiovascular system. For each of these the associates must give SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, and plan) notes on the patient(s) as well as answer the questions associated with their case.

CAPStone Project Work

This month meant projects were in full swing with associates meeting with their mentors working to create authentic solutions. Project groups have also been using BaseCamp as their project management platform as well as meeting with their instructors every other week to keep them updated.

Observational Rotations

Associates continued their career exploration in February with two more rotation weeks. While on observational rotations, associates were tasked to be on the lookout for our two pillars of critical thinking/problem solving and adaptability.

Below is a small clip of what the associates get to experience while on rotations:

Mid America Transplant

The healthcare associates had the wonderful opportunity to visit Mid-America Transport. Associates got to hear about their mission, how they support families, and tour the state of the art facility. A volunteer from Mid America told her story about receiving the gift of life in the form of a liver.

As a follow up to our tour at Mid America, friend of SCC CAPS, internship host, and organ recipient, Will Klein told his story about being diagnosed with kidney failure all the way to his post-transplant lifestyle changes. Will talked specifically about his view of healthcare as a patient and what qualities made the best healthcare professionals throughout his journey.

USP 800 Training

This month, nurse educator Jann Christensen and occupational health nurse, Theresa LaGarce of BJC were able to come back and train the morning associates on USP 800. The training showed associates proper dawning and doffing different levels of Personal Protective Equipment in specific simulated situations.

Thank you again to our rotation sites! We could not provide these experiences without each one of you!
