Lowell Memo: Issue #7

November 8, 2013

Published by Lowell School & the Lowell PTA

Greetings from Lowell!

On Monday, November 11th, we look forward to commemorating Veterans for their selfless service to all of us. We'll begin gathering at 9:05 at the flagpole in front of school. Major Steven Fixler from the American Legion Post 76 will visit Lowell to gift us with a new flag. We will raise the flag and say the Pledge as a school community. If you walk your children to school, please feel free to join us. If you drop them off in the Willow pick-up area, they will be able to proceed through the building to join us.

Please feel free to continue sending pictures of Veterans that are special to your family via hard copy or to lowellveterans@gmail.com. Please include the name of the Veteran, the names of your Lowell children, and the branch of the military served. Any hard copy pictures will be sent home prior to Thanksgiving. The display will be in our main hallway through November.

Be sure to check out the Memo and the Lowell website for ongoing communication. We are grateful for your partnership! Have a wonderful week!

The Green Corner- Recycle Your Used Cooking Oil This Thanksgiving!

Cooking oil that is poured down a drain sticks to sewer pipes, causing clogs and breaks that are costly for homeowners and municipalities to repair. Grease can also interfere with water treatment at our sanitary facilities. Innovators are now reconstituting cooking oil into biofuel. So collect your used Thanksgiving liquid cooking oil in a milk jug, tin can, or other container and bring it to the Wheaton Public Works Department (821 W. Liberty Dr.) for collection on Saturday, November 30th, between 9 a.m and 12 p.m. All types of cooking oil will be accepted. For more information about how this works, visit http://greengrease.info/recycling-cooking-oil/.

Wheaton, IL

This time the leaders of our school, the 5th graders, will be in charge of the prize-winning spinning wheel! Every dollar raised from this wheel goes directly to Lowell!

And we're also giving you yet another reason to attend! The class with the highest percentage of attendance will win a pajama party at school with the Chic-fil-A Cow making an appearance in their classroom!

Help raise money for Lowell, while dining at a local restaurant that not only gives back to the community, but has great food and is a fun place to hang out with family and friends! See you all there!

Boxtops Benefit Lowell

Hello Lowell School family! This is just a friendly reminder note to be clipping and sending in Boxtops for Eduction. Last year Lowell School received over $900 from the Boxtops program. I'm sure we can pass that goal this year! Every single Boxtop you clip and send to school is worth ten cents! That's all you have to do. Look for the Boxtops for Education label, clip it and send it in to school. Attached is a list of all the great products that you can find a Boxtop on. Opening a box of Cheerios? It's on there. Putting snacks and sandwiches into Ziplock baggies? There's one on that box, too. You can even find Boxtop labels on Green Giant vegetable packages, Kleenex tissues, Avery paper and many, many more things that are used each day. Check out the list, you may have a few things stashed away in your pantry with Boxtops that you didn't even know about. Thanks, and keep clipping and sending those Boxtops in!

To classroom Boxtop Coordinators: Thank you so much for helping earn money for Lowell School! Please remember to count your classrooms Boxtops and put them into baggies of 50. There is a box in the office that they can then be put in. Thank you again for your time and energy clipping and counting. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, Colleen Gemelli-Dunbar at bdunbar83@hotmail.com .
