Peterson's News
12/13-12/17
Winter Break is quickly approaching! I have had families ask about Staff Wishlists. Our PTA has posted them on their website. Here is the link: https://sites.google.com/view/peterson-elementary-pta/staff-favorites
It was wonderful to see so many students and staff in their Peterson Spirit Wear on Friday. Our winner for primary was Mrs. Ammons' Class. That's two months in a row for her class! Our intermediate winner was Ms. Falck's class and I am proud to say that the office staff had 100% participation!
On Wednesday our staff had a presentation about Number Talks. It was so inspiring! Ms. Bogie, our district Math Coordinator, described Number Talks in this way, "A Number Talk is a short, ongoing daily routine that provides students with meaningful practice with mental math and computation through ongoing conversations and discourse. They are structured as short sessions alongside (but not necessarily directly related to) the ongoing math curriculum." She went on to say this, "Number talks help students make sense of mathematics, develop efficient computation strategies, communicate reasoning, and prove solutions." Many of our staff have already incorporated this learning into their day! Below I have included three examples for you to try out!
Thank you for making sure your student is prepared to go outside! The weather this week will be different from day to day, so please be sure to check what may be needed. It would also be helpful to label students' clothing with their name. Our Lost and Found has quite a few items in it!
Below you will find information about ordering Sophia Strong T-shirts, Listen and Learn with Dr. Talley, Parent University, and the 22-23 School Calendar.

Listen & Learn with Dr. Talley
Superintendent Dr. Adrian Talley will hold his final Listen & Learn session with the community in which he will share information about the district as well as his goals. Community members will have an opportunity to share their feedback on what works in the district, what is not working, and what specific suggestions they have for what’s not working. Information gathered during these sessions will help the superintendent in planning for the future and may be used as part of the strategic planning process that will start in January. The final Listen & Learn Session will be held from 7 - 9 pm on Tuesday, December 14 at Crone Middle School (RSVP here).
If you have questions regarding the Listen & Learn sessions, please contact Lisa Barry, Executive Director of Communication Services, at lisa_barry@ipsd.org.

Emergency Closing Information
In light of emergency situations that have caused several local school districts to close for a day, we wanted to communicate with our families the procedures we will use if we were to close for a day due to unforeseen circumstances. Some of the reasons for the closures that have occurred in neighboring districts so far have been related to unsafe water, bus driver shortages, and credible threats. Some situations qualify as an e-learning day. When this is the case, the last day of school remains the same. If we are not able to designate it as an e-learning day, one of our emergency days at the end of the year would be added which would make the last day of school later.
If a situation occurs that requires Indian Prairie School District 204 to cancel in-person learning for a day, we will enact our e-Learning procedures. These procedures were put in place prior to the COVID-19 pandemic when we were trying to prepare for e-learning on severe weather days. Since these procedures were created in 2019, there have been many changes in our ability to provide learning opportunities remotely. The main changes have been the consistent use of Google classroom and technology availability for our youngest learners.
Whenever possible, notification regarding e-Learning Days will occur in the evening prior to the emergency day. Here is an FAQ regarding this type of day. Teachers will have the assigned work posted by the start of the school day for their given levels. For students who do not take their Chromebooks home each night (typically early childhood, kindergarten and first grade) teachers will have sent home a paper copy of a work packet for the students to complete. Teachers will be available to answer questions by email. If the emergency day is expected to be for one day only, the expectation will be for students to complete the work assigned independently. If, for some reason, the emergency situation is expected to be continued for an extended length of time, we will communicate additional plans to provide live instruction opportunities.
All grade levels have created choice boards with various activities for the students to complete throughout the day. Links to those choice boards are listed below. You can find the information above as well as the links below on Peterson's website.

1st:2nd:3rd:4th:5th:Specials:Traffic Update
As you know, we have some unsafe practices occuring during arrival and dismissal. I have been working with the City of Naperville to help to address our concerns. The City staff is recommending that Honey Locust Drive have a ‘No Parking, Stopping, or Standing 8:45 AM – 9:15 AM and from 3:15 PM – 3:45 PM’ from the roundabout at 103rd to Winterberry Avenue on both sides of the street. They are also looking similar restrictions on Chinaberry. They were supposed to discuss and vote at their December meeting. Unfortunately they were unable to get a quorum for the Transportation Advisory Board (TAB) Meeting. TAB has since been cancelled for December and all items that were on the agenda will be moved to the January 6th, 2022 meeting. They hope to have a quorum at that meeting so that they can get these parking restrictions approved and signed.
They also looked at the School Walk Route and Traffic Control Plan that is available on the City website. Both of these documents need to be updated to fit what is currently in the field and happening at the school. The School Walk Route plan was last updated in 2018 when the neighborhood was not fully built out yet, because of this not all of the sidewalks were completed. With the neighborhood built out, they will update this document and show the updated School Walk Route. The Traffic Control Plan will also be updated to show the changes to Honey Locust Drive as well as Chinaberry along with the updated route that parents are expected to take to get to the pick-up and drop-off location.
Boundary Public Comment Option
Over the past several months, we have seen a strong desire from our community to participate in public comment, regarding boundary changes, at the board of education meetings. We also saw a significant number of people express an interest in participating in public comment during the boundary forums. While we wanted to hear from our community during these sessions, our main goal was to provide information to educate the community on the various aspects of boundary adjustments facing our district. We recognize that in providing these informational sessions, there were some who felt we did not provide adequate time to hear public comments from all those who had hoped to participate.
Due to this high level of interest shown by our community in the boundary process, we're inviting District 204 residents to share their opinions with the board, administration, and at-large community via this online public comment form. Comments will be collected and made public via a link on the IPSD boundary webpage. The standard information for public comment sign up will be collected but only name and comment will be shared.
Submission of public comments will remain open through the December 8, 2021 boundary committee meeting. Boundary related public comments will be updated weekly on Mondays with a timestamp of each submission. One comment per person is allowed. Community members will have an opportunity to submit additional comments between the December 8, 2021 boundary committee meeting and the December 20, 2021 board workshop and again before the January 10, 2022 board of education meeting. As a reminder, boundary public comments will be made available to all age groups and, as such, we ask that you consider the audience members and keep comments age appropriate.

Notification of Positive COVID-19 Cases in Schools
Positive cases of COVID-19 in your child's school can be found on the District's COVID Dashboard. The dashboard includes all positive cases of COVID-19 reported to District 204 for individuals who were on campus. The information is updated each Monday by 4 pm. If your child is in close contact with someone who tested positive, a member of the COVID-19 Response Team will notify you directly regarding the need to quarantine as a precaution. Additional information found on this page includes the current transmission level and a link to the corresponding mitigation strategies.
Parents will be notified if their child is considered a close contact with someone who tested positive. Our COVID-19 Response Team at Peterson is our Registered School Nurse, Patti Mathison , and our Certified School Nurse, Christina Cicero. If your child is considered a close contact, you will be given a Quarantine Information Sheet (K-2, 3-5) along with your child's return date, to provide information in what schooling will look like for your child during quarantine. Additionally, I have linked here the District’s Fall Plan with slides 10-13 providing information regarding isolation and quarantine for our elementary students.
