Workshop Overview (2-Day Training)
This event is being held in partnership with Sidney City Schools, Midwest Regional Educational Service Center, and Mercer County Educational Service Center.
Overview of Training: This intensive two-day interactive training is designed to teach educational teams and parents the theory and protocol for the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), an evidence based practice. We begin with identifying key components to designing effective educational environments that foster communication.
Through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play, you will learn the six phases of PECS, including how to teach spontaneous requests, attributes for expanding language, responding to questions and commenting.
The workshop concludes with discussions about the relation between PECS and speech as well as criteria for transitioning from PECS to other communication modalities, such as speech generating devices (SGD).
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- Identify key components to designing an enriched learning environment using the Pyramid Approach to Education.
- Identify strategies for creating opportunities for communication across the day
- Implement the six phases of the PECS protocol
- Discuss the evidence about PECS and its relationship to speech
- Examine the criteria for transitioning from PECS to other communication modalities such as speech and SGDs

Note: Employees of the Midwest Regional ESC, Sidney City Schools, and the Mercer County ESC should contact their supervisor before registering for this training.
- $425 per person - SLP's employed by PK-12 public school districts and Boards of DD in Mercer, Shelby, Logan and Hardin counties.
- $475 per person - Personnel from other organizations / agencies

What time should I arrive at the training site? Please arrive 15 minutes early to each session to complete the check-in process. Please enter through the main entrance and check in with the office before proceeding to the assigned classroom.
Food & Beverage: Bottled water and assorted snacks will be available at the beginning of the training. Participants are free to bring snack items for themselves or to share with the group.
What You Should Bring? Participants should bring note-taking materials, writing utensils, and electronic devices (i.e. laptop and/or chromebook) with them to the session.
Our Cancellation Policy - Cancellations must be received by September 18, 2019 at 3:00 pm. Cancellations received outside of this policy will not be accepted. Attendees and/or employing districts will be billed accordingly.
