Building Character in children a parent article
Ways to Build Character in
Children
By Kimberly L. Keith O
Updated September 04, 2019
ln some schools, structured character education is a part of the curriculum, right
alongside reading, writing, and math. Schools seek to instill the values of integrity,
respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, caring, and citizenship in their students to
strengthen the social fabric of the school and community. But building character for
kids can't just happen in the classroom.
The qualities of character develop through an interplay of family, school, and
community influences and the child's individual temperament, experiences, and
choices. Parents have many opportunities and tools to build their children's character.
Using them will give you the joy and satisfaction of seeing your kids grow into people
of integrity and compassion.
Be a Role Model
Parents who exhibit the qualities of good character powerfully transmit their values to
their children. Model the choices and actions that are essential to being a person of
good character. lf you are honest, trustworthy, fair, compassionate, respectful, and
involved in the greater good of your family and community, your children will see this in
your everyday actions and choices. They will also see that this behavior brings a sense
of joy, satisfaction, and peace to theirfamily.
ln her books on moral development in children, psychologist Michele Borba teaches
that the first step is empathy. Empathy in the parent-child relationship allows us to
teach all of the other character values to our children. When your children feel that you
understand and care about them deeply, they have the intrinsic motivation to learn the
lessons of love and character you share.
Use Teachable Moments to Build Character
Children also need to learn that when they violate your family's guiding ethics, you will
implement consequences with fairness and dignity. Effective discipline strategies help
you use teachable moments to build character. Always take the opportunity to explain
why your child's behavior is wrong when you correct him. Make a habit of identifying in
your own mind the value you wish to teach the child based on the particular behavior.
Choose a consequence that is appropriate to teach that value.
Related: How Should You Respond When Kids Lie?
One natural consequence that you can use is to make amends. For example,
dishonesty is best resolved when you confess and are held accountable. Sometimes
an apology to the person wronged is enough; other times you must take action to right
the wrong (say, returning a "borrowed" toy to a friend or sibling). Brief, but direct
instruction about why you have a family rule and the underlying value you hold helps
children learn from consequences and discipline: "ln this family, we believe in honesty.
Was it honest of you to take Sam's car and pretend you didn't? What should you do to
make it right?"
Tell Stories from Literature and Life
Parents and teachers used stories to teach moral lessons long before books were
even invented. As you tell the stories of your life and the world around you, you convey
lessons in values and ethics to your children. And as you discuss the stories you see
around you (on TV, in books, in the media), you reinforce your values. Children's
literature abounds with qreat books that illustrate important values, as in this list from
the American Academy of Pediatrics.
When you listen and respond to your children's stories about school and peers, you
can help them think through the right thing to do. Be mindful of your children listening
to the stories you tell other adults. These anecdotes show your kids how your values
guide all aspects of your life.
Provide Opportunities to Practice
Kids must practice what they learn before it comes naturally to them. This applies in
learning character, too. Children can learn vicariously when they see character building
in action and learn directly when they hear lessons in values. But they need
hands-on experience to know the true meaning of character.
Men your child has the opportunity to make a decision (say, having to choose
between two friends), help her take ethical action and see the positive results in her
daily life. You can also find ways to be involved in social and community action that are
accessible to your children.

A word from our president (PTA President)
Welcome to 2019-2020 School Year
Hello, my name is Joanne Stump and on behalf of the Carlisle Elementary Parent Teacher Association it is my pleasure to welcome you to the new school year. This will be my fourth year on the PTA board and I am very fortunate and excited to serve as PTA President this year. Whether you are a “seasoned” coyote or a “first timer”, we encourage you to reach out to the PTA with any questions as you navigate the year ahead. We are looking forward to a great year filled with fantastic events, community building activities and, most importantly, supporting our kids so they can continue excellence in education.
I know many of you are coming into a new school and want you to know the PTA can help with that transition. My family is from California so, like you, I can understand the difficulty of moving into a new area. My daughters Olivia (5th) and Penny (Kindergarten), and my husband and I were welcomed into the Carlisle community with open arms and hope that will be the same experience for all our families. In fact, some of my closest friends are parents that I’ve met and worked alongside with in the PTA and I know that has been the experience for others as well.
PTAs aspire to educate and engage families across communities to advocate for all children so that every child may reach their full potential. Our organization proudly serves as a bridge between home and school, helping to ensure that parents and teachers work together to best serve our children. Our goal is for 100% membership to give each and every student a voice. This is your chance to be a member of a great organization that funds and organizes many of the opportunities you see around campus. Your support that comes from joining the PTA enables us to provide our children with the ability to participate in school enrichment programs, school assemblies, class field trips, family events, and assist staff with tools needed to enhance student’s learning abilities.
Making all these programs and events possible is due to our PTA volunteers. These parents, guardians, and family members are key in making our organization successful and your participation as a volunteer enhances the experience of all children at our school. Families can participate as much or as little as they are able, and each person finds a balance that’s right for them. Whether you have 30 minutes or a couple hours, your ideas, time, and talents are truly needed. We can accommodate both your availability and interests and match you with needed tasks.
If you have any questions, ideas, or would like to help in any way, please reach out to me at president@CarlislePTA.org. I really do hope you consider joining the PTA, as it makes a huge difference in the lives of our children.
Visit www.CarlislePTA.org to become a member and for more information about the PTA. You can view upcoming events, sign up for volunteer opportunities, purchase spirit wear and other items, and stay connected with the school. We also have set up a very active Facebook page that will keep you looped into our Carlisle community. https://www.facebook.com/groups/carlislepta/.
All the best for a wonderful year ahead,
Joanne Stump

National Walk/Bike to School Day!
On Wednesday, October 2, 2019 it is National Walk/Bike to School Day. Challenge yourself and your child(ren) to walk or ride bikes to school that day.
Some reasons to participate:
· Encourages healthier habits by encouraging your child(ren) to incorporate regular physical activity into their daily routine
· Helps reduce the amount of air pollutants
· Promotes safety by giving you a chance to talk with your child(ren) about how to be a safe and responsible walker/bike rider
· Less traffic congestions (no carpool line!)
· Increases the sense of community when students see multiple families participating
Some safety tips for participants:
· Walk or ride with a buddy or some buddies
· If able, have an adult with you
· Walk, don’t run
· Don’t push
· Stay away from cars
· Stay aware of your surroundings
· Bikers – wear your helmets
· Bikers – check your tires the night before
· Wear bright clothes so other walkers/riders/drivers can see you
· Check “left-right-left and behind you” before crossing any streets
· Wait for street signals if they are at the corner you are crossing
· Listen to instructions from the crossing guard
· Bikers – walk your bike across the street (do not ride it across the street)
· Map out your route and if possible, practice it the weekend before
You can learn more about the event at:

The Tardy Bell Rings at 7:45 a.m.
Everyday your child is in school is another day they are learning. Missing only 10% of the school year (18 days) can make it hard for your child to keep up with the lessons. If you are struggling to get your child to school on time or to get them to school at all, we are here to help you. Please reach out to us for help.

Operation Child Safe!!
OPERATION CHILD SAFE
Dial (469) 752-0600 – Press 1 for English, then Press 3 to report an absence
Operation Child Safe is a program established to account for every child who is not present when attendance is taken (7:45am). It is important that you call our Child Safe line every day that your child is absent or tardy, even if you have notified the teacher. Please leave a brief message including your child’s full name, student ID number, grade, teacher, and specific reason for absence or tardy. Child Safe is strictly to confirm your child’s safe arrival at school.
Please remember that calling to report an absence for the purpose of Child Safe does not provide an excuse for the absence. When your child returns to school, a written note (signed and dated) from the parent or doctor stating the reason for the absence or tardy is required within 3 days in the front office.
Your child’s safety is very important to us! We appreciate your cooperation with Operation Child Safe and with our attendance procedures.
Respectfully,
Carlisle Elementary Office Staff
We'd love for you to come volunteer this year!

Friendly Reminders
Safety First!
This is true for volunteering, lunch visits, attending Good Morning Carlisle on Fridays ~ anytime you are going past the front office. Thank you for your cooperation.
Drive Safely. Children are EVERYWHERE!
MORNING DROP-OFF:
The drop-off line forms along Old Orchard heading west, permitting a right turn only into the driveway. Driving east on Old Orchard, please do not turn left into the driveway.
The City of Plano has posted a “No Left Turn” sign at this location. You may NOT turn left into the driveway between 7:30–8:30 a.m. or 2:30–3:30 pm on school days.
Please pull forward, maintaining a single line to the main entrance before letting your child exit the car. Please stay in your car and come through the driveway. We have a system in place for carpool designed to keep our children safe. All children will enter the school by the main entrance. Parents may start dropping off children at 7:00 a.m. Students go to the gym until 7:30 a.m. when they are dismissed to go to their classrooms.
All children should exit on the right side of the automobile. Children should not exit cars in the middle of the driveway or in the streets. Safety Patrol members are stationed along the front sidewalk to assist your children until the 7:45 bell rings. Adults should not get out of the car for any reason while in the driveway. Please have your children ready to get out of the car as soon as the car stops in the carpool lane.
We recognize there are several restrictions that make carpool a bit tricky in the morning. Every single one of these are in place to keep our children safe and to start each morning with little stress and lots of smiles! Thanks you for your cooperation with each of these carpool safety rules and thank you for modeling respect for our rules and for one another when bringing your children to school each day!

Below are the PISD Guidelines for keeping your kiddos home if they are sick. Please help us in preventing the spread of illness by complying with PISD guidelines. It is important to remember that your child must be symptom free, without the aid of medication, for 24 hours before returning to school.
“ The guidelines below have been developed for the exclusion of students who have communicable or contagious diseases. These regulations are in compliance with the requirements of the local health authority, Plano ISD Administrative Guidelines, and the Board of Trustees’ appointed medical officer.
1. A student with any of the following symptoms will be excluded from school until such time as the student is free of symptoms, has been satisfactorily treated, or submits a signed physician’s statement that he/she is not contagious.
· Temperature of 100 degrees or more. Student must be fever free for 24 hours, without medication, before re-entry.
· Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Student must be symptom free for 24 hours without medication before re-entry.
· Pain and/or swelling at angle of jaw.
· Undetermined rash over any part of the body.
· Undiagnosed scaly patches on the body or scalp.
· Red, draining eyes.
· Intense itching with signs and symptoms of secondary infection.
· Open, draining lesions.
· Jaundice”
Tips for Antibiotic Use
· Antibiotics are only for bacterial infections
· Colds and the flu are viruses and are not cured by antibiotics
· Overusing antibiotics can make bacteria resistant to future antibiotic use
· Over use of antibiotics can also harm the good bacteria in our bodies
· Antibiotics only work if they are used for the full amount of time they are prescribed
· It takes about 1-2 days before you start feeling better after starting antibiotics
· Do not stop taking antibiotics when you start feeling better, complete the full days they were prescribed
· Do not use old antibiotics
· Do not use antibiotics that were prescribed for someone else
· With children, antibiotics dosage is based on weight, each child will probably need a different dose (unless they are the same weight)
