Keeping the Hockinson community in the loop!
HSD Replacement Levy Passing; Thank You Voters
Hockinson voters appear to have approved the replacement levy that was on the February 8, 2022 ballot. A February 11 ballot count showed nearly 53 percent of Hockinson voters voted in favor of the levy, which supports important educational programs and services not funded or underfunded by the state of Washington, including extracurricular activities, performing arts, school nurses, security staff, transportation, and special education services.
School Board Chair Patrick Carter and Superintendent Steve Marshall are thrilled with the outcome and what it will mean for Hockinson’s schools.
Due to the funding consequences of the 2018 state funding formula and COVID, Hockinson Schools have experienced three straight years of budget reductions. Through it all, the HSD has done its best to keep the focus on students and levy dollars will continue to support student programs through 2026. “Hockinson School District has shown over the last three years that we are good stewards of levy dollars and will continue to be fiscally responsible with our community’s investment,” said Board Chair Patrick Carter. “We have been working hard to keep rates as low as possible to minimize the burden on our local taxpayers, while still providing funding for essential programs and services.”
Marshall is hopeful that the levy will kick off a new chapter in the HSD’s history and inject some optimism into its schools that have been impacted by the pandemic. “That this levy is likely to pass is really exciting. In spite of the challenges of the past two years, it shows how much the Hockinson community values and supports its students and schools,” said Superintendent Steve Marshall. “The approved levy dollars will have a direct impact on student learning and help us pursue our goal of preparing all students for lifelong success.” Marshall adds, “Our students, both future and current, have been the focus of this levy and they are the winners from this “Yes” vote. Our community has made an investment in them and I know they will make the most of these opportunities that this levy creates.”
State Eyes Possible Change in Mask Requirement
While there has been no official announcement on changes to the state’s mask requirement in schools, we anticipate that there will be revisions in state and federal guidance in the coming weeks.
At his Feb. 9 press conference Governor Inslee governor lifted the state’s outdoor mask mandate. Next week, he is expected to announce a timeline for ending masking in indoor settings, including schools. Read more HERE. Chris Reykdal, Superintendent of Public Instruction, also shared his support should the Governor make a state-level decision to end mask mandates in schools.
Until an official announcement is made on face coverings in schools, school districts must continue to follow state indoor masking requirements. We will provide information to staff and families as we learn more from the governor next week. In the event that the mask mandate is lifted, staff and students who wish to continue wearing masks will be able to continue to do so.
