From the Principal
Hello, Fairbrook Families!
We have been very busy around Fairbrook during January. Our students are being challenged to learn new, more rigorous academic material. This is exciting for our teachers because this is the time of year when we see real growth in all our students.
I am looking forward to some of our upcoming events and reflecting on our success for January! Our Links of Love was a HIT! Our students are hugely impacting our world by contributing donations to our Beavercreek F.I.S.H. Pantry as well as to Ella’s Art Project Mission, providing an “art supplies care package” for children in hospitals. In addition, on January 18th, our Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program was kicked off and we had many fathers and father figures attend and sign up to become a Watch D.O.G. for our school. On Friday, February 2nd, our kindergarten students will celebrate their 100th day of school with activities related to counting to 100! In addition, our staff and students are preparing their science projects for the upcoming Science Fair, to be held on February 22nd.
Because of our crazy Ohio weather, we advise that you dress your child in layers so they can be prepared for the ever-changing weather. Also, please make sure they wear or bring gym shoes on PE days. Other types of footwear make it difficult for your child to participate safely in PE class. Don’t forget to have your child check our Lost and Found if you are missing a coat, lunchbox, or gloves/hats. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, Mrs. Laravie, or me. Speaking of Mrs. Laravie, Counselor’s Week is the first week of February! She does so much for all of our students and we are grateful to have her at Fairbrook. Mrs. Laravie and I can be reached by email or phone if you need us. Thank you for all of your support!

WatchDOGS
Who are WatchDOGS?
(Dads of Great Students)
WatchDOGS are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who
volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S.® school.
During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students,
play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways,
assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively
engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Please see the PDF below for more details.
From the Front Office
Your students' safety is our priority!
Student Dismissals - If your student is being picked up by someone other than their parent or legal guardian, the office must be notified in advance of the name of the person picking them up. In addition, that person must present a photo ID upon arrival. For the safety of our students, we will call parents for permission before releasing them if we did not receive prior notice. Thank you for your patience and assistance in this matter.
To report an absence or late arrival, please call the absence line at 937-429-7616 option 1, or send an email to fairbrookattendance@gocreek.org. Please include your child’s name, teacher, and reason for the absence or late arrival. Please bring in doctor/dentist notes from appointments within 5 school days.
When sending correspondence by email to teachers regarding absences, late arrivals, early dismissals, or changes in daily transportation, please include our office staff at fairbrookattendance@gocreek.org. Please notify the office no later than 3:00pm with any last minute changes for afternoon dismissal, limiting changes to emergency situations or medical appointments, and attempt to complete early dismissals by 3:30pm.
We are always happy to help answer your questions!
Mrs. Soine and Mrs. Osterday
Visitor Window
UPDATE: As an added safety measure, our front doors are now locked during the school day. Please come to the window for assistance. We will open the doors at 3:40 to allow parents in for dismissal.
Our transaction window has been updated and is now in service! Please step to the window at the right of the front doors for assistance before entering the building. Mrs. Soine and Mrs. Osterday will be happy to assist you there. If you are picking up a student or plan to enter the building for any reason, please be sure that you bring your state ID with you when you arrive.
Nurse's Nook
The clinic is in need of girls' leggings and sweatpants sizes 5-12!
Due to the increase in illness-related absences (both students and staff) that occur this time of year, we would like to reiterate our district illness policies (see below). When calling/emailing/messaging about an illness-related absence, please inform us of the type of illness (fever, flu, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.).
INFLUENZA INFORMATION
Beavercreek City Schools District Policy regarding influenza diagnosis specify that students must remain out of school for a minimum of three (3) days post-diagnosis and at the discretion of school nurse or administrator. If, after those mandatory three (3) days, the child still has a fever or any other symptoms that would warrant exclusion from school (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea, etc.), then this will also follow the 24-hour symptom-free (without medication) policy (see below); that indicates that students are not allowed to be at school for an additional 24 hours after the cessation of the aforementioned symptoms and with no medications (e.g. Tylenol/Motrin, antiemetics, etc.).
If you have tested positive for Influenza A or B, please contact the school office at 429-7616 or FAIRBROOKATTENDANCE@GOCREEK.ORG.
Please also understand that if you obtain a note from your medical provider that states that the child is able to return to school, that this document does NOT supersede school policy. These policies are written with the health and safety of your child (and all other students) as the main objective.
OTHER (COMMUNICABLE) ILLNESS POLICIES
Bacterial Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) - Return to school after 24 hours of being on antibiotics
Strep Throat - return to school after 24 hours of being on antibiotics AND being fever free for 24 hours (without the use of medication).
Fever - (100.4 or above) - return to school after being fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication
Vomiting - return to school after being vomit free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication
Diarrhea - If 2 or more episodes of diarrhea occurs within a 24 hour period, the child is to be excluded from school until diarrhea free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication
Extra clarification of the 24 hour rule:
If your child has fever/vomiting/diarrhea on Monday, they are not to be at school on Monday ( the day of the symptoms) and then an ADDITIONAL 24 hours afterward. If their symptoms are gone on Tuesday (without medication), they can return to school on Wednesday. However, if they are still symptomatic on Tuesday, they would need to remain home on Wednesday as well - and so on. The state recommendation if 48 hours symptom-free before returning to school, as the additional day of recovery allows for better healing.

From the Skills Lab
Hello Fairbrook Families!
I hope this update finds you and your families healthy and happy in the new year. Through January and February the students in Skills Lab and I are looking at our Digital Etiquette. Digital Etiquette, or as it’s sometimes called; Netiquette, is a specific set of rules that are used when we are using online devices; where we don’t always see or hear each other and can’t determine facial expressions or verbal inflection. Using good etiquette is always important, but it can be tricky if we are uniformed of the expectations of others when we are online. In real life, if you used your hands to eat soup, it would seem really odd to others. The same could be said if you wrote “ttyl” (talk to you later) at the end of an email to your boss or teacher; however, writing it to a friend would be completely acceptable. We have to know when it’s okay to use abbreviations or emojis appropriately.
Here is a link to some videos that you can share at home with your child(ren):

(You will have to log in as a student and use the Clever App to access it easily on your child’s device from Fairbrook)
I wish all of you much happiness in 2024, and HOPE FOR A SNOW DAY! (Yes, I’m yelling 😀 LOL!)
Sincerely,
Sheri Hensley
