Mathematics

This week we began a new focus in our learning: Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers. Our first step was to gather prior knowledge of multiplication strategies of 4 digit x 1 digit numbers ( Th H T O x O ). In sharing our strategies, we were able to establish common strategies for this type of problem and were able to articulate the importance of understanding place value. We also used our estimation skills from the previous unit to create a prediction of our answer. We continued by applying these steps to division.

Next week we will look at strategies for multiplying by multiples of 10 before we learn about multiplying by 2 digits.

Thank you to the many parents who have signed and returned the end of unit reviews in the green maths assessment folder. Your reliability is appreciated.

IPC

The Grade 4 students have really been working hard on extending their mapping knowledge and skills this week.

They started them by drawing (freehand) a map of their home country. They then looked closely at a range of map features; key/legend, symbols, labels, compass rose, and scale.

We ended the week by using lines of longitude and latitude to pinpoint a range of locations from around the globe. Great fun and we were able to assess our ability to use a range of sources to gather our geographical information by reflecting carefully on our learning.

Next week, we will be continuing to our increasing knowledge and skills of mapping by learning how to draw a map to an appropriate scale.

SPELLING FOCUS

This week, we will continue with other plurals, most notably nouns ending in -f or -fe.

The rule for spelling most words ending in -f, change the f to a v and add es

e.g. elf -> elves

For most words ending in -fe, drop the fe and add -ves

e.g. wife -> wives

However, some nouns have unusual plurals and need to be learned by heart!

e.g. ox -> oxen, mouse -> mice, goose -> geese

Words to be learnt: half, halves, shelf, shelves, penknife, penknives, leaf, leaves, wolf, wolves

Additional challenge words: yourself, yourselves, bookshelf, bookshelves, children

Read a 'Just Right' book for 20 minutes or more each evening. Share and discuss with family members what you have read. Practice reading aloud in front of your family members using clear projection, fluency and expression.
