Facilities - What's Next? Part Two
Central Lee Community, Parents, Staff, and Students,
As most of you know, last spring the Central Lee School District asked our community to make a decision on the direction of our facilities through a bond referendum election. The community voted and the referendum failed by 3% (Yes - 57%, No - 43%). As many of you know, Iowa is one of three states in the nation that requires a 60% supermajority for bond referendums to pass. In fact, the referendum was only 40 votes away from passing.
Several months have passed since April and there has been little news regarding what is next for the direction of facilities. Since the vote, interest rates have risen as have construction costs.
District staff, the board, and our architect team have used feedback from this past spring and have been working over the past three months on a few modifications to the original plan with the intent to consider going towards another referendum this Spring. While working on various parts of the plan, we have come up with a secondary option for our community to consider. This option provides some modifications and different concepts to our facilities while also achieving some of the goals set out in the original plan.
Gathering community input on the two options (original modified plan and new option) is critical for the board and myself to consider before making a decision on a possible referendum vote in the future. In order to gather community input, we are inviting members of our community to an event on December 19 at 6:30 pm at the high school. At the event, community members will learn about proposed modifications to last year’s facility plan while also learning about a new option. After hearing about the two plans presented, community members will be able to provide feedback to the school board which will assist us in future planning.
The event should last no longer than 60 minutes and all members will be able to provide written feedback through a survey at the conclusion of the evening. We hope that you will be able to join us and provide your thoughts on the future of Central Lee’s facilities.
Should have any questions preceding the event, feel free to reach out to me.
Sincerely,
Dr. Andy Crozier
