Figurative Language
Figurative language is language that create a picture in your mind to give you a better understanding. There are 6 common types of figurative language.
Simile -compares two things using the word like or as
Metaphors - compares two things without using like or as. They can be far more complicated than a simple idea. (Think Katy Perry - Baby You're a Firework)
Personification - when you give human or living characteristics to something that doesn't have either of those things - the wind howled through the streets
Hyperbole - exaggerating for effect. We use hyperboles to make a point and can be funny (I'd just die if I could meet him.)
Onomatopoeia - words that imitate or represent the sound that it suggests (pow, crash, quack, meow) It does not include made up words that are not in the dictionary
Alliteration - repeating the same sound in the beginning or in the middle of words (She sells sea shells by the seashore)
