2023 February Parent Newsletter
Lovely Month
In February we often think of Valentine's Day, candy hearts, cupid, and love! How awesome that we have a special day marked for the expression of our love for others. February also marks the celebration of Presidents' Day, when we remember the birthdays of our countries founding fathers like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln; Black History Month, when we celebrate African American heroes; and Random Acts of Kindness Day, when we celebrate kindness!
It's enjoyable to see our schools are get involved with the sentiments of this month by decorating for Valentine's Day and Black History Month and participating in Acts of Kindness challenges, engaging in activities to celebrate and reading stories of these topics.
Speaking of Love❤️❤️❤️
The book introduces the notion that there are 5 basic ways that we express and receive love from each other. These are known as the "5 love languages" and most people have one primary one but for some people they "speak" more than one. This primary "love language" is not only how we feel loved but how we in turn express our love to others. The love languages are:
Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch.
As I started to read the book I could not put it down; I was so enthralled with understanding how to first examine my families love languages and then begin to effectively express love to them. This also helped me understand what my own love language is and how I so often mistakenly love others the way that speaks to me personally and do not always investigate to find out how others best understand the love I so much want to express. If you have never read this impactful book this would be a great month to check it out!
It is available on amazon for $8.99 and in the PIRC with the Parent Involvement Resource Center form.

Parent Power Hour🙌
Parenting Tools, Tips, & Take-aways
The goal of PPH was to partner with parents to support in a variety of areas that would ranged from self care, family organization, goal setting to healthy mental health. Community leaders and PCS Staff led in ice breakers, discussions and hands-on activities that help to foster a sense of community and support. Participants each week shared their thoughts and ideas about the subject of the week and were given tools, tips and take-aways. At the conclusion of the sessions participants were able to give their feedback on the series and their suggestions going forward for future sessions. Each week participants received door prizes, vouchers for school supplies and uniforms, and goodie bags. The final session participants received a gift card and special recognition for attending!
Special thanks to all our quest speakers and community partners who donated door prizes, goodie bags, and gift cards. Ms. Jessica Jennings of Mitchel County Family Children & Youth Collaborative was a major community partner in this endeavor and we are especially grateful for her support!
The PCS Parent Engagement Program and Partners plan to continue with more Parent Power Hour in the future. A new PPH series is being planned for September 2023 with new topics, incentives, and more Parent Tools, Tips, and Take-aways!
