Coaches Corner with Stingrays Coaches

Coaches Corner w/ Coach Ian - "They Don’t Think As We Do"
I have been coaching for nearly 40 years, plus I swam competitively for another 20 years. Why did I stay in the sport for so long? I had a great experience.
When you look at youth sports today, young kids are under a lot of pressure from every part of their life. They have their peers, their coaches (teachers), and their parents, all wanting different things from them. I don't know if I could have grown up with so much pressure on me. Coaches Corner Interview w/ Coach Pike This interview above is with Coach Mark, and we talk about everything from his time at Stingrays, Being an Irish National Champion, Irish Sayings, and Golf! Watch Below: Go Rays! | Coaches Corner Dryland Tip w/Coach MarkUnderstanding the Warm-Up-To-Swim. Dryland is one of the cornerstones of training at Stingrays, and it all starts off with a great Warm-Up-To-Swim (WUTS). All Stingrays swimmers will get active on dryland before getting in the water at every practice and meet. We believe in warming up to swim, so that we don’t have to swim to warm-up. As soon as we hit the water, our bodies are primed and ready to start taking great strokes immediately. During WUTS, we take time to assess the key shapes and positions needed to be successful in the water. This includes, 1) Raise core body temp 2) Connect the core 3) Address the hips 4) Address the shoulders and 5) mobilize and stabilize key swimming joints. A successful WUTS is essential to “bulletproof” our swimmers, keeping them happy, healthy and available to swim at their best. Starting each practice with a great WUTS is something all Stingrays swimmers should strive for. Remember, training is cumulative and all work done during WUTS will add up over time to make you a better athlete and in turn, a better swimmer. GO RAYS! | Coaches Corner Life Tips w/ Coach AllisonSwim practice, school, work, homework, and friends can be overwhelming at times. Sometimes we feel like we can't do it all... And that is okay!! We as humans do not have to do it all to feel like we matter and our confidence in our ability to do all things. Here are some tips when feeling overwhelmed or struggling to get everything done. 1. Anxiety is a huge stressor for many teens and adults. It can make us feel like we could never get anything done. To help combat this: try mediating. Mediating does not mean you have to sit for an hour without talking and it does not take years to master. Deep breathing for 1-2 minutes before taking on a large task can be extremely helpful when stressed. 2. Getting Fresh air when stressed or overwhelmed is a good way to reconnect with yourself and calm yourself down to realize you can do anything you set your mind to! 3. Talking to someone is a great way to release stress. Whether it be stress about school, talk to a friend or a counselor. If you're stressed about swimming, please talk to one of your coaches. We are here to help you and make swimming the best it can be for you. Your parents are here to help you as well, having open communication with them can help better understand what you as a swimmer and student are feeling and how to better help you! If anyone ever needs someone to talk to, please reach out to me, I am always open ears! Go Rays! |
