DHS COUNSELING DEPARTMENT
Reasons to See Your Counselor
Counselors are here to help students in many areas including scheduling classes, assisting students with issues concerning home life, friends, school, work, bullying, and any special situation that may be important to a student. We assist students with planning for their future, including career exploration, college exploration and/or military. We provide students with information about graduation requirements, signing up for the SAT and ACT, completing the FAFSA and completing college applications. We are here to help the “whole” student.
How to See Your Counselor
Students: This year the Counseling Office is open for "walk-in" appointments anytime outside of instructional time (i.e. before school, during lunch, during an off-period, or after school). Students may also see their counselor anytime during the school day with a pass from their teacher. If your counselor is unavailable, students may schedule and appointment by completing the Counselor Appointment Request Form. Stop on by, we look forward to meeting with you!
Parents: Counselors make students a priority during the school day. Therefore, we encourage parents to make an appointment prior to coming to the campus to ensure your student's counselor is available, to avoid scheduling conflicts, and to ensure you will have the time you need to address your concerns and questions. To make an appointment please complete the Counselor Appointment Request Form, or simply contact the counseling secretary, Mrs. Dinia Henderson at (dhenderson@duncanvilleisd.org) or 972-708-3912.
Please note that parents without an appointment may experience a wait time, but counselors will do everything within their power to meet with parents as soon as possible.

These are English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology, and U.S. History. If a student takes and passes any of these end-of-course exams in middle school, those scores will count toward their state testing requirements for graduation. Parent Introduction to Social Emotional Learning
Social-emotional learning has been defined as “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning)
Duncanville ISD understands that it is critical to pay attention to the development of the whole young person; this includes character education. Parents have a dual role to play in raising a self-aware, respectful child who knows how to manage his or her emotions, make responsible decisions, and resolve conflicts non-violently (Edutopia). Duncanville ISD is partnering with our parents and the community to create an environment of trust, respect and support at home & school.
As adults in the lives of young people, it is important to model "emotionally intelligent" behavior at home, school and in the community. This is the first step in nurturing emotionally intelligent children. We will work to create a climate that supports social and emotional learning - in and out of the classroom.
Below is the link to a short video, discussing the implementation of parenting practices that encourage social and emotional development. A partnership between home, school and the community is vital to the social emotional growth of our Duncanville ISD scholars.
