Islam

Origin

Islam means “submission.”Monotheistic religious tradition which developed in the Middle East. Developed in the 7th century. Origin is in the Arabian Peninsula. Islam is one of the worlds fastest growing religions. Islam represents one of the bloodiest ideologies that humankind has come up with.

Founder

Muhammad was the founder of Islam. He married a wealthy widow at 25 years old. Accepted throughout the world by the Muslims as the last of the prophets of god. The most reviled figure of in the history of the West from the 7th century. Muhammad is one of the most influential figures in history. Muhammad was also known as “the Glorified One.” He is part of the daily call prayer.

Principles

This religion is Monotheistic. Islam is ranked second in the world with about 1.2 billion members. Allah is the Islamic name for God. Muhammad was Allah’s messenger. The Holy Book was the Islamic Bible.

The 5 Pillars:

Testimony of Faith: Most important pillar: Open declaration to tell community you believe that there is nothing worthy of worship, apart from Allah and that Muhammad is his final Messenger.

Prayer: Praying to Allah 5 times a day, 5 Prayers are Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha.

Zakah: When they would help out the poor or the needy.

Sawm: Fasting: Fasted in the ninth month; for 29-30 days; People would stop eating and drinking between, just before sunrise and sunset.

The Pilgrimage: If they could afford to perform the Pilgrimage; Follow the path of the previous prophets.

Diffusion

People would walk around the earth and spread the word of God to others so they also knew. It spread through Egypt, Freezan, Armenia, Persia, and all the places around there.

Compare

Christianity, Hinduism and Islam are the two most widely practiced religions in the world.

Islam and Christianity believe in life after death; resurrection.

Islam & Christianity-Both hold many beliefs and practices in common. Both known as “Abrahamic religions” Both believe in one God

Islam & Judaism- The Prophet Muhammad met both Jews and Christians; Both Strict Monotheism. Both believe in one God.

Islam & Hinduism- Pray more than once a day.

Islam & Confucianism- Two of the three largest religions on the world. No Clergy/Leadership. At least one Holy Book. Not common religion in America . Believe that there is one God.

Islam & Taoism- Both rely on central Holy text. Both advocate peacefulness. Both hinge upon the concept of “submission.”

Islam; Second largest religion in the world. Called Muslims. House of worship is mosque. Main day of worship is Friday. Clergy: Imams. Population of 1.3 billion. Based on monotheism.

Christianity; Largest religion in the world. Called Christians.House of worship is church, chapel, cathedral. Main day of worship is Sunday. Clergy: Priest- Minister. Population of w billion. Importance is stressed on believing in God and the Bible.

Judaism; Twelfth largest religion in the world. Called Jews. House of worship is church, chapel, cathedral. House of worship is synagogue. Main day of worship is Saturday. Clergy: Rabbis. Population of 14 million.

Hinduism; Third largest religion in the world. Originated in the Indian subcontinent. Place of worship is temple. Population of 1 billion. Based on polytheism.

Taoism; An ancient Chinese religious tradition. Dates back to the 3rd or 4th century B.C. Virtue is in all things. Violence not encouraged.
