⚔BATTLES OF BULLRUN⚔
-July 21,1861
- This was the first major land battle of the armies in Virginia. On July 16, 1861, the untried Union army under Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell marched from Washington against the Confederate army, which was drawn up behind Bull Run beyond Centreville.
- On the 21st, McDowell crossed at Sudley Ford and attacked the Confederate left flank on Matthews Hill. Fighting raged throughout the day as Confederate forces were driven back to Henry Hill.
- Late in the afternoon, Confederate reinforcements extended and broke the Union right flank. The Federal retreat rapidly deteriorated into a rout. Thomas J. Jackson earned the nom de guerre “Stonewall.” By July 22, the shattered Union army reached the safety of Washington.
- Forces engaged were: Union were 28,450 and confederates were 32,230 people.
- In the Union,460 people were killed 1,124 were wounded and 1,312 were missing and captured.
- In the confederate 387 were killed, 1,582 were wounded and 13 were missing and captured.
- The result was confederate with victory.
Joseph E. Johnston's thoughts and opinions about this war
Joseph E. Johnston (1807-1891) was a U.S. military officer who served as a Confederate general during the Civil War (1861-65). A veteran of the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Johnston entered the Civil War as one of the South’s senior officers and was appointed a full general. He won an early victory at the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) in July 1861, but was later criticized for being quick to retreat during the early stages of the Peninsula Campaign in the spring of 1862.
He was very confident about this upcoming war "The battle of Bullrun".He stated that "We got everything, the people the weapons and we just need to attack and we'll get the victory."
His confident rose him up and at last he did get his early victory.
My opinion about the Battle of Bullrun
In my opinion the funny or the interesting thing about this Battle was that :
- People of the North were so sure they would win the battle, many of them took picnics and watched from a nearby hill.
- And another one would be the about the Confederate spy named Rose Greenhow provided information on Union army plans that helped the Confederate generals during the battle.
This battle teaches us a valuable lesson about, not losing focus in doing something valuable to you, no matter how easy it seems to be.
⚔BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG⚔
What is the Battle of Gettysburg?
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863. In and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by union and confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of entire war. And often described as the turning point of the Civil War. After a great victory over Union forces at Chancellorsville, general Robert E. Lee marched his army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania in late June 1863. On July 1, the advancing Confederates clashed with the Union’s Army of the Potomac, commanded by General George G. Meade, at the crossroads town of Gettysburg. The next day saw even heavier fighting, as the Confederates attacked the Federals on both left and right. On July 3, Lee ordered an attack by fewer than 15,000 troops on the enemy’s center at Cemetery Ridge. The assault, known as “Pickett’s Charge,” managed to pierce the Union lines but eventually failed, at the cost of thousands of rebel casualties, and Lee was forced to withdraw his battered army toward Virginia on July 4.
Quotes from Robert Lee
"I can anticipate no greater calamity for the country than the dissolution of the Union. It would be an accumulation of all the evils we complain of, and I am willing to sacrifice everything but honor for its preservation."
- Col. Robert E. Lee, U.S.A. in a letter to his son Custis, January 23, 1861
"I shall carry with me to the grave the most grateful recollections of your kind consideration, & your name & fame will always be dear to me. Save in the defense of my native State, I never desire again to draw my sword."
- Robert E. Lee to General Winfield Scott
From Northerners Point of view...
By being the supporter of North. I say we won big time! We showed those Southern amateurs, how to fight and win a battle! And say no to slavery!
