7th Grade Field Trip
Here is what some of the kids had to say about the day!
- Hannah Dunkin “The water treatment was my favorite because I like to learn about water and how to make it cleaner for people to drink.”
- Ella Pelong “One thing I learned on this field trip is that these jobs take a lot of work and it takes commitment .”
- Ray Kesteloot - “He showed us how the roads are in layers. How one layer is better than the other.”
- Faith Nelson - “One thing I learned on the trip was that the water waste treatment filters the water so it is easier for the water works to clean.”
- Riley Sailors - “They can’t call the landfill a dump because a dump doesn’t have rules and regulations like the landfill does”
- Paige McMurray “The Marion County Engineer’s office was my favorite because it was very interactive.”
- Jeanetta Clayton “The SCISWA was my favorite because they are trying to find better ways for the landfill to be more safe for the world.”
- Madison Wells “One thing I learned on this trip is that after the water leaves the water treatment plant it goes to Lake Red Rock.”
- Rylyn McCarty “He talked about how to put trackers to a deer and he told us how to estimate how many animals are in an ecosystem.”
- Carson Cecil “Water that touches trash is called leachate.”
- Ethyn Elliott- “This one was my favorite because it showed us a cool explosion of how a straw with ridges will slow how far the water goes. This showed us that pipes with ridges (culverts) can slow the water flow.”
- Cassidie DeMaderios “One thing I learned on this trip was that in a landfill before you put the trash in, you have to put a liner in the ground so it (leachate) doesn’t get into groundwater.”
- Ezra Schmidt “One of the things I learned was how the Marion County Engineer department used different materials to make the roads stronger.”

Shelf Elf leaves Mrs. McCombs a note each week as to which class he thought did the best job for the week. Then the winner of the Shelf elf Award is announced on the intercom and the class receives a trophy to display in their room for a week. Our students are working hard to win the trophy
So far the winners have been Mrs. Galeazzi’s Kindergarten class and Mrs. Crawford’s 1st grade.
This week in the library we are learning and exploring stem activities to go along with our read aloud books of: The Most Magnificent Thing, Ada Twist, Scientist and If I built a Car.
Have you filled someone's bucket today?
By teaching our behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a more positive approach for student success. The purpose for school wide PBIS is to establish a climate of appropriate behavior in all area of the building.
The expectations at West Elementary are:
Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible
Our students are working each day on being bucket fillers by meeting and exceeding our behavior expectations. To celebrate our student bucket filling we are swimming at the REC Center this month.
Team K at West Elementary
The Kindergarten Team at West Elementary expanded, a bit, this fall to include long-term substitutes to cover those teachers on medical leave. Each of the substitutes is a long-time teacher of kindergarten and has been welcomed by a wonderful team and administration.
Here’s a little more about each of the kindergarten teachers at West Elementary:
Tina Cook:
· Years Taught = 21
· College Attended = University of Northern Iowa
· Degrees/Endorsements = Elementary Education & Reading
· Grades Taught = Reading Specialist, Kindergarten, & 2nd
· What do you like best about teaching Kindergarten? I love the younger kids. They are excited about school and learning. I enjoy their innocence. The look in their eyes when they figure out they can do something they weren't able to do before. I LOVE all the hugs from the kids!
Elaine Galeazzi:
· Years Taught = 39
· College Attended = Central College
· Degrees/Endorsements = Elementary Education, Art, & Coaching
· Grades Taught = Art & Kindergarten
· What do you like best about teaching Kindergarten? The thing I love best about teaching Kindergarten is the excitement the students have when they first figure out how to sound out words and read. I love how the students have unconditional love for everyone and how they love to give the best hugs!
Candi Hatch:
· Years Taught = 18
· College Attended = University of Northern Iowa
· Degrees/Endorsements = Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Special Education
· Grades Taught = Early Childhood Special Education Preschool, KinderPrep, & Kindergarten
· What do you like best about teaching Kindergarten? Spending the day with 20-23 new best friends each year, and watching them grow and blossom educationally, as well as emotionally and behaviorally. Watching them become confident in all that they can do is very rewarding! There is never a dull moment in kindergarten, and if I'm ever having a stressful day, they are always able to make me smile. It really is the best grade!
Sharla McCloud:
· Years Taught = 31
· College Attended = University of Northern Iowa
· Degrees/Endorsements = Elementary Education & Early Childhood Education
· Grades Taught = Kindergarten
· What do you like best about teaching Kindergarten? I love listening to the way kids think and helping them make discoveries both academically and about themselves.
Lisa Thomas:
· Years Taught = 31
· College Attended = Central College
· Degrees/Endorsements = Elementary Education & Early Childhood Education
· Grades Taught = Kindergarten
· What do you like best about teaching Kindergarten? I love helping little ones realize they are able to do so much on their own…they’re incredible little beings!
Mandy VanderLinden:
· Years Taught = 17
· College Attended = Simpson College
· Degrees/Endorsements = Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Math, & Reading
· Grades Taught = Kindergarten & 1st
· What do you like best about teaching Kindergarten? The little ones are like sponges. They absorb everything you teach them!
Substitutes
Donna Flattery
· Years Taught = 44
· College Attended = William Penn University
· Degrees/Endorsements = Elementary Education & Early Childhood Education
· Grades Taught = Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, & 4th
· What do you like best about teaching Kindergarten? The realization that we are building the educational foundation for those who are the future. Every day is a new adventure!
Brian Kingrey
· Years Taught = 15
· College Attended = Central College & University of Northern Iowa
· Degrees/Endorsements = Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, Reading, Reading Specialist, Administration, Supervisor of Special Education, Evaluator, and Doctor of Educational Leadership
· Grades Taught = Kindergarten
· What do you like best about teaching Kindergarten? The best part of the school year is October, when routines have been set and all the kiddos are in their element learning new things. Once these routines have been set for the year, learning takes place across the board, and that’s exciting for the kids and me. Seeing that “lightbulb” come on when they learn something new is something I strive to see in some fashion on a daily basis.
The Kindergarten Team, as it is comprised for the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, has over 200 years of teaching experience, with most of those years in Kindergarten itself. It takes a special teacher to understand the subtle nuances of the kindergarten-aged child; (s)he is not preschool-like anymore and yet they’re not exactly first-grade-like either. Therefore, it takes someone who understands early childhood education, child development, and approaches to learning for young children in order to create a classroom that embodies 5- and 6-year old minds, emotions, and developmentally appropriate practices.
