Walt Disney
Never giving up on his dreams no matter what happened
Biography:
Childhood
Walt Elias Disney's family lived on a farm in Chicago, Illinois. In the first few years of his life he would always visit his neighbors who were 70 years old and they, along with his family, encouraged his artistic abilities. In 1908 a new school opened up in Mareline, Missouri and he wouldn’t be able to attend until he was eight years old in 1909. Once he was finally able to attend the new school he had learning difficulties and had to repeat a grade. His life on the farm ended when he got a typhoid fever and pneumonia. When he grew older he was always restless which eventually took him to Chicago where he worked as a carpenter and earned only one dollar a day.
Later on in his Life
When he started making his own animations he produced films called Laugh-O-Grams. The first one he made he didn’t get any profit from because he was so nervous that when the theater manager asked how much the film cost, he blurted out his own cost and ended up making no profit. The business eventually went bankrupt and Disney left for California with only $40. Eventually in California, he founded Disney Bros. Studio with his brother Roy. After failing to find a distributor for their first two films they decided to add sound to their third one which was Steamboat Willie and came up with the character Mickey Mouse which soon became the most popular cartoon character. After that he began to work on full length animations and decided to start a production on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. His wife and brother tried to talk him out of making it because they thought he would fail and fall into debt again, but Disney ignored them and went on forward with creating it. The film was released in February 1938 and became the most successful film of the year and earned him $8 million, which is equivalent to $134,033,100 today. He won one big Oscar and seven little Oscars for the film. After that he continued making more like it, like Pinocchio, Bambi, Alice in the Wonderland and more. In the late 1940’s he began working on ideas for a theme park for five years and eventually opened in 1955 as Disneyland. Sadly he died on December 15, 1966 from lung cancer.
Memorable Quote from Walt Disney:
“All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me. … You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”
