PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE by Kayla Bell
Dear Families –
Report cards are going home on Monday. I want to provide you with a little information to help you better understand the marks.
The report card summarizes information in three areas:
1. Behavior Progress: How a student learns.
2. Academic Performance: What a student has learned.
3. Learning Progress: How a student is progressing.
BEHAVIOR PROGRESS
This section of the progress report addresses those classroom behaviors which are key to school success, such as managing responsibilities and communicating with others.
A student will receive a C, G or R to indicate current performance in each area:
C--Consistently
G--Generally
R--Rarely/Sometimes (Needs Improvement)
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
This progress report provides information on your student's current level of performance in Reading, Writing, Language, Speaking and Listening, Mathematics (all aligned to the Common Core State Standards) and Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, Music, and Visual Arts.
A student will receive a 4, 3, 2, or 1 to indicate current performance in each area, based on the end of the year grade level expectations. The scoring guide or rubric which provides a description of each level (1-4) for each learning target can be viewed on the district website or obtained through the teacher. A "1" should be accompanied by a teacher comment or additional communication. An X is used when an area has not been assessed or when there is not enough information.
4--Highly Proficient
3--Proficient
2--Nearing Proficiency
1--Developing
LEARNING PROGRESS
This section describes your student's progress over time. A student may be performing below expectations for a grade level but still have made significant progress during the trimester. Alternately, a student may be performing at or above standard academically, but only making minimal progress. It is important that students of all developmental abilities are making steady or significant progress. A " - " should be accompanied by a teacher comment or additional communication.
A student will receive either a + = or - to indicate current progress in each area:
+ for significant progress
= for steady progress
- for minimal progress
I hope this information is useful and helps you better understand your child’s report card. If you have any questions regarding the report card, please contact your child’s teacher.
Kayla

NRCO NEWS
NRCO Meeting: Join us Tuesday, December 6, at 2pm. We will have a special guest speaker from EG Robotics to discuss their after school programs, along with some sample projects. It should be exciting and informative!
D4$: Tuesday, December 6, stop by for some great food at the Old Spaghetti Factory (OSF) in Sherwood and a portion of your order goes to the NRCO. Please note that the FLYER IS REQUIRED and will be sent home with students before the event. The event runs all day and is valid with dine-in and carry-out orders. This is a new location for OSF and we are hoping this will be a family favorite for our community so please show up in force... bring friends and family and pass the flyer along to anyone looking for some great food. Your support is very appreciated!!!
Season of Caring (formerly Giving Tree): Lend a helping hand to thousands of students who are homeless or whose families are in need. Please donate any of the following... Gently used or new coats, shoes, pants (no jeans please) and note that adult sizes are perfect for high school students! New socks. New underwear (men's and women's sizes). New shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Store bought beef jerky, granola bars, and canned soup. We are also accepting donations of new or gently used clothes for babies/toddlers that will go to a local charity to help foster children. So please open those closets and your hearts! Please drop off items in the bins located in the lobby from November 29 through December 9. THANK YOU!
(e)Scrip: Shop for the holidays and earn money for our school! Please remember to shop from https://smile.amazon.com and select Nancy Ryles Community Organization. Also shop online at the eScrip mall: https://secure.escrip.com/olm/signin.jsp. Thank you for your consideration and happy shopping! Also keep an eye out for some great savings opportunities and gift ideas... information coming next week.
Lost & Found: Please claim any lost & found items before Winter Break. With the changing weather, our lost & found is overflowing as kids leave their coats and jackets behind on the playground. Please have your child check for any lost items in the next couple of weeks. Items will be available until Thursday, December 15. At that time, all unclaimed items will be donated to Beaverton Clothes Closet. Parents without background checks can look for lost items any school day between 3:10 and 4 pm. Also, putting your child's name on their clothing helps us return it to them successfully. We hope many lost coats find their way home before the holidays!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM
The Beaverton School District has been awarded a $669,484 Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education over the next 3 years. The Beaverton School District (BSD) has developed a comprehensive project to improve the quality of physical education in the District, increase physical activity before, during, and after school, and create a school culture of wellness and activity that improves student health, nutrition, social/emotional development, and learning outcomes. In addition to the grant funds, the District has developed several community partnerships to support the project including Nike and Tualatin Hills for a contribution of over $235,000. The BSD program will serve more than 28,000 K-8 students. As part of this grant there is required data that must be collected on physical activity, nutrition and physical fitness. Please read the attached form with more information about the data collection. If after reading you decide your student will not participate in the data collection, print, sign and send the form back to the main office of your student’s school.
BSD Unveils new My Stop™ app to track your child's school bus
We know that you are busy and want to make the most of your time. Wouldn't it be great to know when the bus will get to your child's stop each morning? The Beaverton School District's Transportation Department has partnered with Versatrans® to bring you the My Stop™ bus information app.
Available for both iOS and Android, My Stop™ gives you the ability to know exactly where your child's bus is on the route. The app pinpoints the bus's location on a map, as well as provides the estimated time of arrival to a specific student's bus stop. The app uses the District's GPS system. The location is updated every five seconds and the estimated time of arrival is recalculated due to traffic delays. The app will come in especially handy during inclement weather.
The District has been testing the app for several weeks and it is now available for free for parents/guardians and students.
My Stop™ requires very little setup, especially for parents and guardians. Usernames are tied to specific students. All a parent needs to do is log in using the student's ID # as the username and the student's birthdate as the password.
