Macbeth Act 5 Scene 1
1971, Roman Polanski Vs. 2010, Rupert Goold
The Play Vs. The Films
In the play, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth begins to sleepwalk because her conscience no longer lets her rest. She reminds herself of the murders she and her husband have committed and begins to rub her hands constantly. The version created by Roman Polanski, best portrays the scene compared to the book. In that version Lady Macbeth is in her bedroom like in the book, rubbing her hands . In the version created by Rupert Goold, Lady Macbeth rubs her hand in a hallway with a sink. I did enjoy the version from Rupert Goold because it showed how awful Lady Macbeth felt about herself. When she turned the facet on, she saw blood coming out instead of water. Although that version did not match to the book, the director really showed how Lady Macbeth felt very remorseful.
Difference
One difference I noticed between the two versions was that Roman Polanski placed Lady Macbeth in her bedroom with the gentlewoman and doctor. It was important because Rupert Goold placed her near sink while Lady Macbeth tried to wash her hands.
